Description
The Barrett MRAD SMR 308 Win is the simplified member of the MRAD family, and this is its most compact form: a 17 inch barrel in 308 Winchester, black Cerakote, fixed stock. SMR stands for Single Mission Rifle, and the name is the specification. Barrett fixed the caliber, free floated the barrel and removed the folding hinge, and in exchange the rifle carries a 0.75 MOA accuracy guarantee and sheds close to two and a half pounds against a standard MRAD.
The stock is fixed rather than folding but still adjusts: the cheek rest moves vertically, and a Magpul MOE grip means the grip is whatever you want it to be for the price of an AR pattern replacement.
What the Barrett MRAD SMR 308 Win Gives and Takes
The barrel is fixed and free floated. There is no user changeable barrel system here, which is the defining limitation of the SMR line and worth stating plainly: this rifle is a 308 Winchester for life. If you want to move between chamberings on one receiver, the standard MRAD is the rifle to buy.
What you get in exchange is a lighter, slimmer, cheaper rifle with a factory accuracy guarantee. Barrett lists the 308 SMR between 10.6 and 12.0 pounds and between 39.5 and 46.5 inches depending on barrel length, and this 17 inch version sits at the short, light end of that range.
A two port muzzle brake is fitted. On 308 in a rifle of this weight recoil was never the issue, so the brake is about keeping the reticle steady enough to spot your own impacts. It does make the rifle noticeably louder for anyone beside you.
Optics, Ammunition and Practical Notes
The top rail runs 21.75 inches with 10 MOA of built in cant, which is a sensible amount for the distances a 308 is actually used at. It is long enough to position almost any scope where your head naturally falls.
Seventeen inches costs roughly 100 to 150 feet per second against a 24 inch barrel depending on the load. Inside 800 yards that difference is academic. Beyond it, a longer barrel is the better tool, and on a fixed barrel rifle that decision is made at purchase rather than later.
Heavier match bullets suit a short 308 best. A 175 grain load holds velocity downrange better than a 168, and for hunting a 150 to 180 grain soft point covers deer through elk at sensible ranges. Magazine capacity is restricted in several states, so check your law before ordering.

Ammunition and Transfer Notes for the Barrett MRAD SMR 308 Win
308 Winchester is the most available centerfire rifle cartridge in North America after 223, and that is a real part of the case for this rifle. Factory match, hunting and practice ammunition is stocked everywhere, brass and dies are cheap, and load development is thoroughly documented. Cartridge and chamber standards are published by SAAMI, so anything marked 308 Winchester is safe in this barrel.
For a rifle with a 0.75 MOA guarantee, ammunition choice is where most of the variation will come from. Factory match loads from the major makers will generally hold that standard; bulk practice ammunition will not, and it is worth keeping the two separate in your expectations rather than blaming the rifle.
The muzzle is threaded beneath the brake. MAG5 Firearms does not sell NFA items, so a suppressor would be a separate purchase requiring ATF approval, a tax stamp and its own transfer, and it is not legal in every state. If you want the folding stock and the user changeable barrel, our MRAD in 308 Winchester is the modular alternative, and more of our inventory is on the MAG5 Firearms shop page. This rifle ships to a licensed dealer of your choosing, where you will complete a 4473 and a NICS check.
