Description

The Barrett Model 99 50 BMG 32in FDE is the heavy barrel configuration of Barrett single shot rifle, finished in Flat Dark Earth Cerakote. Where the 29 inch fluted version is built to be carried, this one is built to sit still and shoot small groups. The heavy 32 inch barrel adds three pounds and three inches and gives back stiffness, barrel life and a little velocity. The action is the same fixed breech single shot that gives the Model 99 its reputation.

Nothing cycles, nothing moves under recoil except the bullet, and there is no magazine well cut into the receiver to soften it. At 25 pounds and 50 inches it is still eight pounds lighter than a semi automatic Barrett 50.

Heavy Barrel Versus Fluted on the Barrett Model 99 50 BMG 32in FDE

A heavy barrel resists the harmonic flex that opens groups up, and it heats more slowly, which matters more than it sounds on a cartridge that puts this much energy through a bore. Over a long string from a bench the heavy tube holds zero better than the fluted one.

Three extra inches of barrel also buy a little velocity. On 50 BMG the practical difference between 29 and 32 inches is modest, but at the distances this rifle is used the extra retained energy is not nothing.

What you give up is portability. Twenty five pounds and 50 inches against 23 pounds and 47 for the fluted version. If the rifle mostly lives on a bench or a prone mat, take the heavy barrel. If it has to be carried any distance, the fluted one is the better buy.

Equipment, Blast and Ammunition

Standard equipment is the same across the Model 99 line: a match quality trigger, a 13.75 inch rail carrying 27 MOA of built in cant, a three port high efficiency muzzle brake and a rear hand grip that accepts an adjustable monopod.

That brake is effective and extremely loud, directing blast sideways at anyone near you. Plenty of public ranges either prohibit large bore rifles or restrict them to a dedicated bay, so confirm before you drive out with 25 pounds of rifle.

Match grade 50 BMG is priced per round rather than per box. Surplus and steel case ammunition is cheaper and far less consistent, and on a rifle built around a heavy match barrel the ammunition will be the accuracy limit long before the barrel is.

Why it is worth considering

  • A heavy 32 inch barrel that holds zero through a long string
  • Flat Dark Earth Cerakote, which matters on a rifle this size in open country
  • Fixed breech single shot action built for group size rather than rate of fire
  • Match quality trigger and a 27 MOA rail as standard
  • Still eight pounds lighter than a semi automatic Barrett 50

Who it suits

This suits the bench and prone shooter who wants the most accurate configuration Barrett offers in 50 BMG and does not need to carry it far. If portability matters more than the last fraction of a group, the 29 inch fluted version is the better choice.

Ammunition, Optics and Transfer Notes for the Barrett Model 99 50 BMG 32in FDE

Good 50 BMG ammunition is the single biggest lever on what this rifle will do. Match loads come from a handful of makers and are priced per round; surplus and steel case is cheap by comparison and inconsistent enough that lot variation will be visible on paper. On a heavy barrel rifle built for accuracy that is the wrong place to economise. Commercial cartridge standards are published by SAAMI.

The rail is 13.75 inches, shorter than on the semi automatic rifles, so measure eye relief before choosing a mount. Its 27 MOA of built in cant exists so a scope with generous elevation still has travel left at long range, and an optic that cannot use it wastes the feature.

Check local law before ordering, as 50 BMG rifles are prohibited in California and restricted in some municipalities. The same configuration is listed in black Cerakote, and the lighter 29 inch fluted version in FDE is the one to buy if you carry the rifle. More of our inventory is on the MAG5 Firearms shop page. This rifle ships to a licensed dealer of your choosing, where you will complete a 4473 and a NICS check.
