Description
The Barnes VOR-TX 9mm Luger 115gr TAC-XP is the standard pressure member of the Barnes defensive handgun line, item 32005. It drives an all copper TAC-XP hollow point at roughly 1125 fps producing about 323 ft-lbs at the muzzle. The distinction matters: Barnes also sells a 115 grain TAC-XP in a plus P loading, and this is the one to choose if your pistol is not rated for plus P or you simply prefer not to run it. Each box holds 20 rounds.

Barnes VOR-TX 9mm Luger 115gr TAC-XP Overview
The TAC-XP is machined from solid copper with a large hollow cavity and no lead core. In a 9mm that solves a specific problem. Conventional jacketed hollow points are tuned to expand within a narrow velocity band, and they can clog with clothing and fail to open or separate from the jacket when they hit an intermediate barrier first.
A copper bullet with nothing to separate opens into sharp petals at roughly double the original diameter and retains essentially all of its weight. That consistency through denim, leather and auto glass is the entire argument for monolithic defensive bullets.
115 Grain TAC-XP Hollow Point Performance
At 115 grains this is the standard light 9mm weight, but because copper is less dense than lead the bullet is physically longer than a 115 grain jacketed one. Barnes loads it to a correct overall length so it feeds and chambers normally in a standard magazine.
Barnes tunes the powder charge for low muzzle flash, which is worth more than most people appreciate. A defensive encounter is far more likely to happen in poor light than in daylight, and a large fireball costs you your night vision at the worst possible moment.
Why Shooters Choose 9mm Standard Pressure Defense Ammo
The 9mm is the most carried handgun cartridge in the world for sound reasons. Recoil is manageable, magazine capacity is high, and modern bullet design has closed most of the gap people used to argue about between it and larger bores. The bullet is what matters now, not the case head diameter.
Choosing 9mm standard pressure defense ammo over a plus P loading is a legitimate decision rather than a compromise. Plenty of pistols, particularly older designs, compact aluminium framed guns and some subcompacts, are not rated for sustained plus P use. Standard pressure also means less recoil and faster follow up shots, which for most shooters is worth more than the small velocity difference.
If you carry in a jurisdiction or shoot at an indoor range with lead restrictions, this load also lets you practise with the same ammunition you carry.

Range Notes For This All Copper Self Defense Bullet
Function test before you carry it. A solid copper bullet has a different nose profile than the round nose practice ammunition most pistols are fed, and a small number of guns with tight feed ramps are particular about it. Run at least two full magazines through your actual carry gun.
Published velocity comes from a test barrel. A subcompact with a three inch barrel will run slower, and since the Barnes VOR-TX 9mm Luger 115gr TAC-XP relies on velocity to open, that matters more here than with a lead core bullet. Chronograph a very short barrel if you can.
Rotate carry ammunition. A round that gets chambered and cleared repeatedly can suffer bullet setback, which raises pressure. Mark the round that keeps going back in the chamber and retire it rather than shooting it.
