Description
The Barnes VOR-TX 40 S and W 140gr TAC-XP is Barnes current production defensive loading for the 40 Smith and Wesson, item number 32006. It drives an all copper TAC-XP hollow point at roughly 1120 fps from a four inch test barrel, producing about 394 ft-lbs at the muzzle. A note on the name: this load is sometimes listed as hunting ammunition, but Barnes builds and markets the TAC-XP as a personal protection round. Each box holds 20 rounds.

Barnes VOR-TX 40 S and W 140gr TAC-XP Overview
The TAC-XP is machined from solid copper with a large hollow cavity and no lead core. In a defensive handgun cartridge that solves a specific problem. Conventional jacketed hollow points are tuned to expand within a narrow velocity band, and they can either clog and fail to open or come apart when they meet an intermediate barrier first.
A copper bullet with no core to separate opens into sharp petals at roughly double the original diameter and retains essentially all of its weight. That consistency through clothing and barriers is the whole argument for monolithic defensive bullets.
140 Grain TAC-XP Hollow Point Performance
At 140 grains this is a heavy for caliber bullet in 40 Smith and Wesson, which usually runs 155 to 180 grains in lead core loadings. Copper is less dense than lead, so a 140 grain copper bullet occupies about the same length as a heavier jacketed one and is loaded to a similar overall length.
Recoil is moderate for the cartridge, and Barnes loads it for low muzzle flash, which matters more than most people realise in a low light encounter. Velocity from a compact three inch barrel will be meaningfully lower than the four inch figure quoted here.
Why Shooters Choose 40 S and W Defense Ammo
The 40 Smith and Wesson has lost ground to the 9mm over the past decade, but a great many people still carry one and a great many agencies still issue one. It splits the difference between 9mm and 45 ACP on paper, and with a modern bullet it is entirely adequate for the job.
What a copper bullet adds to this 40 S and W defense ammo is barrier consistency. If you carry, the realistic scenarios involve heavy clothing, a car door or a windshield far more often than a clean unobstructed shot, and that is exactly where lead core designs are least predictable.
Some jurisdictions and ranges require or prefer lead free ammunition, particularly indoor ranges with limited ventilation. This load qualifies, which means you can practice with the same ammunition you carry.

Range Notes For This All Copper Self Defense Bullet
Function test before you carry it. A solid copper bullet has a different nose profile than the round nose practice ammunition most pistols are fed, and a small number of guns with tight or unusual feed ramps are particular about it. Run at least two full magazines through your actual carry gun.
Published velocity comes from a four inch barrel. A subcompact will run slower, and since the Barnes VOR-TX 40 S and W 140gr TAC-XP relies on velocity to open, barrel length matters more here than with a lead core bullet. If you carry a three inch gun it is worth chronographing.
Rotate carry ammunition periodically. Rounds that get chambered and cleared repeatedly can suffer bullet setback, which raises pressure. Mark the round that keeps going back in the chamber and retire it.
