Description
The Barnes VOR-TX 454 Casull 250gr XPB is about as much performance as a revolver cartridge delivers. An all copper XPB hollow point leaves the muzzle at roughly 1700 fps carrying about 1605 ft-lbs of energy, which is rifle territory out of a handgun. The 454 Casull was built to do this, and a solid copper bullet is one of the few designs that can survive being launched this hard. Each box holds 20 rounds.

Barnes VOR-TX 454 Casull 250gr XPB Overview
The XPB is machined from solid copper with a large hollow cavity and no lead core. At 1700 fps a conventional lead core handgun bullet is well outside the velocity band it was designed for, and it tends to either fragment on impact or strip its jacket. Neither outcome produces the penetration a hunter needs on an elk or a bear.
A copper bullet with nothing to separate opens into sharp petals at roughly double the original diameter and retains essentially all of its weight. On a 45 caliber bullet driven this fast, that combination produces a wound channel that is both wide and very deep.
250 Grain XPB Hollow Point Performance
At 250 grains this is the lighter option in the Casull lineup, and in a copper bullet that is the correct choice. Monolithic bullets penetrate far beyond what their weight suggests, so trading mass for velocity buys a flatter trajectory and more reliable expansion without giving up the penetration that matters.
Barnes loads the 250 grain XPB hollow point to full Casull pressure. This is not a downloaded practice round, and the difference between it and a 45 Colt loading in the same revolver is dramatic in both directions.
Why Hunters Choose 454 Casull Hunting Ammo
The 454 Casull is a lengthened, massively strengthened 45 Colt running at roughly four times the pressure. It turned the revolver into a legitimate elk and bear cartridge, and in a Freedom Arms or a Ruger Super Redhawk it is the tool serious handgun hunters reach for.
What this 454 Casull hunting ammo adds is a bullet worthy of the case. Hard cast lead penetrates but does not expand; ordinary jacketed hollow points expand but can come apart at these speeds. A monolithic copper bullet does both jobs at once, which is why it has become the default choice for guides carrying a revolver in bear country.
Be honest about recoil. The 454 Casull is genuinely punishing, and a great many people who buy one shoot it badly. Most revolvers chambered for it will also fire 45 Colt, and practising with the milder cartridge before stepping up is the sensible approach.

Range Notes For This All Copper Revolver Bullet
Published velocity comes from a test barrel. A 7.5 inch Freedom Arms will come close to it; a 2.5 inch snub nose Alaskan gives up several hundred feet per second. Since the Barnes VOR-TX 454 Casull 250gr XPB depends on velocity to open, barrel length matters, and a short barrelled gun is worth chronographing.
Do not fire 454 Casull ammunition in a 45 Colt revolver. The case is longer and will not chamber in most, but the reverse is safe and common: a 454 revolver will fire 45 Colt. Clean the chambers thoroughly after shooting the shorter cartridge or you may struggle to seat Casull rounds afterwards.
Barnes packs the load 20 rounds to a box. Given the recoil, most people sight in and hunt with one box and practise with something milder. Store it cool and dry.
