Description

Barnes TAC-XPD 40 S and W 140gr takes a deliberately unusual approach to a cartridge normally loaded heavy. Most .40 defensive ammunition runs 165 or 180 grains. This runs 140, and the reason comes down to what a solid copper bullet needs in order to work.

Why the Lighter Bullet in a 40

The copper bullet in Barnes TAC-XPD 40 S and W 140gr is less dense than lead, so an all copper TAC-XP bullet of a given weight is physically longer than its lead-core equivalent. Keeping the weight down keeps the overall cartridge length sensible and leaves room for the large hollow cavity the design depends on.

More importantly, copper hollow points need velocity to open. Barnes designed the TAC-XP with thin petals and a deep cavity specifically so it expands at lower impact speeds than a conventional jacketed bullet requires, and dropping to 140 grains buys additional velocity that works in the same direction.

The result is that Barnes TAC-XPD 40 S and W 140gr is 40 caliber defensive ammunition that expands from a compact pistol barrel where a heavy conventional load might not, while retaining essentially all of its weight because there is no lead core to separate. What leaves the muzzle is what reaches the target.

Barnes TAC-XPD 40 S and W 140gr Specifications

Barnes TAC-XPD 40 S and W 140gr is a 140 grain hollow point in .40 Smith and Wesson, all copper TAC-XP construction, 20 rounds to the box, from Barnes Bullets. The TAC-XPD line is the company dedicated personal defense handgun ammunition.

Being solid copper makes Barnes TAC-XPD 40 S and W 140gr a lead free carry load, which matters for indoor range use as much as for any legal restriction. Lead exposure at an indoor range comes largely from vaporized bullet bases and primer residue, and a copper bullet removes one of those two sources.

The .40 S and W has fallen out of law enforcement favour over the past decade as agencies returned to 9mm, but a great many were sold and a great many are still carried. If you own one, having modern bullet technology available for it is worth something, and this is among the better options.

Recoil, Cycling and Testing It

The .40 has a snappier recoil impulse than a 9mm and this load does not change that fundamentally, though the lighter bullet shifts the character of it slightly. Shooters who find the .40 harsh in a compact pistol will still find it harsh. That is the cartridge rather than the ammunition.

Cycling deserves a check with Barnes TAC-XPD 40 S and W 140gr. A lighter bullet at higher velocity produces a different slide impulse than the 180 grain loads most .40 pistols were tuned around, and a few guns with heavy recoil springs can be marginal. Run a box and watch for short-stroking or failures to lock back on an empty magazine.

Test it properly before trusting it. Run the whole box through the pistol you actually carry using the magazines you actually carry, and note where it prints against your practice ammunition. A copper bullet is longer than a lead one of equal weight, and feed ramp interaction is worth confirming rather than assuming.

Anyone who wants Barnes TAC-XPD 40 S and W 140gr in the .40 Smith and Wesson they still carry who wants a modern all copper hollow point engineered around real carry barrel velocities.

The same TAC-XP bullet is offered in other chamberings, including the TAC-XPD 357 Mag 125gr for revolver carriers. If you also shoot 9mm, the Barnes Defense 9mm 124gr is the conventional hollow point option at a lower cost per round.

Store Barnes TAC-XPD 40 S and W 140gr indoors and dry, and rotate your carry rounds rather than repeatedly chambering the same cartridge. Straight wall pistol cases let a bullet set back under repeated handling, and in the .40 S and W, which already runs at relatively high pressure, that is worth avoiding.
