Description
The Barnes VOR-TX 300 BLK 120gr TAC-TX BT is the heavier of the two Barnes supersonic loads for the 300 AAC Blackout. It leaves the muzzle at roughly 2100 fps carrying about 1175 ft-lbs of energy. Worth knowing before you choose: the lighter 110 grain load in this same line is both faster and higher in muzzle energy, so this is a different trade rather than a straight upgrade. Each box holds 20 rounds.

Barnes VOR-TX 300 BLK 120gr TAC-TX BT Overview
The TAC-TX is machined from solid copper with a polymer tip over a hollow nose. There is no lead core to shed and no jacket to separate, so the bullet opens into four sharp petals at roughly double the original diameter and then continues in a straight line.
Barnes tuned this bullet to expand at Blackout velocities specifically, and at 2100 fps that tuning is doing real work. A 30 caliber bullet designed around 2800 fps will frequently fail to open at this speed, which is the trap most conventional projectiles fall into when loaded into this case.
120 Grain TAC-TX Boat Tail Performance
The 120 grain TAC-TX boat tail trades muzzle velocity for sectional density and a slightly better downrange form. Heavier bullets in a case this small cost speed quickly, which is why it starts 250 fps behind the 110 grain load, but the extra mass gives marginally deeper penetration on a heavy hog.
Barnes does not publish a ballistic coefficient for this loading, so build your holdover from your own chronograph data. Relief grooves machined into the bearing surface reduce bore contact, lowering pressure and cutting copper fouling.
Why Hunters Choose 300 Blackout Deer Ammo
The 300 AAC Blackout drops into any AR-15 with only a barrel change, keeping the same bolt, magazines and lower. It burns its powder charge quickly, so a short barrel gives up far less velocity than a 5.56 would, which is the main reason the cartridge exists.
For hogs and deer at woods distance this 300 Blackout deer ammo does the job a 5.56 struggles with. A 30 caliber copper bullet that expands and holds together produces a far more convincing wound channel on a two hundred pound hog than anything in 22 caliber.
A safety point worth repeating. A 300 Blackout round will chamber in a 5.56 barrel, and firing it there destroys the rifle and can injure the shooter. If you own both uppers, store the ammunition separately and check the headstamp every single time.

Range Notes For This All Copper Hunting Bullet
Function test a full magazine before you hunt. The Blackout is more sensitive to gas system tuning and buffer weight than a 5.56, and a heavier supersonic load may cycle differently from whatever your rifle was set up around.
An all copper hunting bullet prints to a different point of impact than practice ammunition. Zero with this exact load, foul a clean barrel with a round or two first, then leave the optic alone.
Be realistic about range. At 2100 fps the Barnes VOR-TX 300 BLK 120gr TAC-TX has less velocity margin above its expansion threshold than the lighter load, so keep shots inside roughly 175 yards. Past that, the 110 grain version is the better choice.
