Description
Barnes Precision Match 6mm ARC 105gr is purpose-built for one of the more interesting cartridges of the last decade. The 6mm ARC was developed to give an AR-15 sized action genuine long range capability, and a 105 grain match bullet is exactly what that mission calls for.
What the 6mm ARC Was Built to Do
The problem the 6mm ARC solves is straightforward. The AR-15 platform is light, common and cheap to feed, but the .223 runs out of usefulness somewhere past 600 yards. Larger cartridges require an AR-10 sized action, which is heavier and more expensive. The 6mm ARC fits an AR-15 bolt face and magazine while pushing high ballistic coefficient 6mm bullets.
The 105 grain bullet in Barnes Precision Match 6mm ARC 105gr is what makes that work. A 105 grain 6mm match bullet has an excellent ballistic coefficient for its size, so it holds velocity and resists wind far better than anything the .223 can send. That is the entire reason to choose 6mm ARC long range ammunition over a standard AR-15 chambering.
The Match Burner open tip match design is a manufacturing approach as much as a bullet type. The jacket is drawn from the nose end rather than the base, leaving a small aperture at the tip. That produces an exceptionally uniform base, and base uniformity is what drives accuracy at distance.
Barnes Precision Match 6mm ARC 105gr Specifications
Barnes Precision Match 6mm ARC 105gr is 20 rounds of 6mm ARC loaded with the 105 grain Barnes Match Burner open tip match boat tail, from Barnes Bullets. It sits in the Precision Match line, which is the company’s target and competition ammunition rather than its hunting range.
The boat tail on Barnes Precision Match 6mm ARC 105gr matters more than in most cartridges. At the distances the 6mm ARC is intended for, drag reduction at the base of the bullet compounds over the whole flight, and the difference between a boat tail and a flat base at 800 yards is substantial in both drop and wind drift.
Twist rate is not a concern in practice. Factory 6mm ARC barrels are cut at 1 in 7.5 or 1 in 8, both of which stabilize a 105 grain bullet comfortably. The cartridge was designed around heavy-for-caliber bullets from the start, so the ecosystem accounts for it.

Not a Hunting Load, and Other Caveats
Do not hunt with Barnes Precision Match 6mm ARC 105gr. An open tip match bullet is not designed to expand, and its terminal behavior is genuinely unpredictable: some fragment violently at high velocity, some pass straight through. Neither is what you want on an animal. The 6mm ARC has good hunting ammunition available and this is not it.
Availability is the other honest issue with Barnes Precision Match 6mm ARC 105gr. The 6mm ARC has a real following but nothing like the volume of .223 or 6.5 Creedmoor, and match grade ammunition in particular can be hard to find. If you compete with the cartridge, buy a case of one lot rather than expecting to restock between matches.
Barrel life is worth knowing about too. Fast 6mm cartridges are harder on throats than .223 or .308, and a competitive shooter putting several thousand rounds a year through one should budget for a rebarrel sooner than they would with a milder chambering. That is a characteristic of the class rather than a fault of this ammunition.
Precision rifle competitors and long range shooters who want Barnes Precision Match 6mm ARC 105gr, running a 6mm ARC in an AR-15 sized action who want consistent match grade ammunition.
For an expanding bullet in the same chambering, the Hornady 6mm ARC 90 grain CX is a monolithic hunting load, and the Frontier 6mm ARC 105 grain FMJ is the cheaper practice option at the same bullet weight.
Store Barnes Precision Match 6mm ARC 105gr indoors, dry and stable in temperature, and keep a single lot together for a match season. Match ammunition rewards that discipline more than any other kind, because removing variables from the group is the whole reason to buy it.
