Description

Barnes Precision Match 300 WM 220gr is target ammunition at the heavy end of the .300 Winchester Magnum, and the bullet weight tells you what it is for. Two hundred and twenty grains is well beyond hunting weights in this cartridge, and the reason is wind.

Why 220 Grains for Long Range

Ballistic coefficient is the number that matters past 600 yards, and it climbs with bullet weight within a given caliber. A 220 grain .30 calibre match bullet has a substantially higher coefficient than a 180, which means less wind drift, less drop and more retained velocity at distance.

Wind is what actually costs competitors points at long range. Drop can be dialled once you know the range; wind must be read shot by shot and every error is punished. A heavy, high coefficient bullet in an extended range target ammunition load reduces the size of that error, which is why the heaviest practical bullet usually wins at distance.

The Match Burner open tip match design in Barnes Precision Match 300 WM 220gr supports that with manufacturing uniformity. The jacket is drawn from the nose end, which leaves a small aperture at the tip and produces a very consistent base. Base uniformity is what drives accuracy once the bullet leaves the muzzle, and it matters more the further you shoot.

Barnes Precision Match 300 WM 220gr Specifications

Barnes Precision Match 300 WM 220gr is a heavy 300 Winchester Magnum load with a 220 grain Match Burner OTM boat tail, 20 rounds to the box, from Barnes Bullets. The Precision Match line is the company’s target and competition ammunition, distinct from the VOR-TX hunting range.

Twist rate deserves a genuine check here. A 220 grain .30 calibre bullet is long, and standard .300 Winchester Magnum barrels at 1 in 10 are marginal for it. Many precision rifles built for this role use 1 in 9 or faster. If your rifle is a standard hunting barrel, shoot a group at 100 yards and look for oval holes before you build a load plan around it.

Recoil from Barnes Precision Match 300 WM 220gr is substantial. A 220 grain bullet from a .300 Win Mag is a serious push, and a long match string will be felt. Most competitors shooting this class of rifle run a muzzle brake or a suppressor, and for good reason.

Barrel Life, Hunting and Honest Costs

Do not hunt with Barnes Precision Match 300 WM 220gr. An open tip match bullet is built for uniformity, not expansion, and its terminal behaviour is unpredictable by design. The .300 Winchester Magnum has excellent hunting ammunition available and this is emphatically not it, regardless of how well it groups.

Barrel life is a real cost of shooting this cartridge seriously. The .300 Win Mag burns a lot of powder behind a .308 inch bore, and a competitive shooter running a few thousand rounds a year should budget for a rebarrel considerably sooner than with a .308 or a 6.5 Creedmoor. That is the price of the performance, not a defect.

Cost per round for Barnes Precision Match 300 WM 220gr is high and the ammunition is heavy. If your discipline allows a smaller cartridge, a 6.5 or 6mm will get you similar hits at a fraction of the recoil, barrel wear and expense. The .300 Win Mag earns its place when you need energy at distance as well as accuracy, which is a narrower requirement than most people assume.

Long range competitors and precision shooters who want Barnes Precision Match 300 WM 220gr, running a fast-twist .300 Winchester Magnum who need the heaviest practical match bullet.

For a milder cartridge in the same match line, the Precision Match 6mm ARC 105gr gets similar hits with far less recoil and barrel wear. If you want an expanding bullet for the same rifle, the VOR-TX RR 300 Win Mag 130gr is the hunting option.

Store Barnes Precision Match 300 WM 220gr indoors, dry and stable in temperature, and keep a single lot together across a match season. Magnum cases hold a lot of powder, and powder is the component most affected by temperature swings, which shows up as vertical stringing at distance long before it shows up anywhere else.
