Description

The Auto-Ordnance 1911 Northern Lights is the upgraded 1911 in a finish you will not see coming the other way at a range. The Cerakote is a deep teal that shifts toward green depending on the light — the aurora reference is earned rather than decorative — and it is set against black G10 grips and a skeletonized hammer. Underneath the colour it is a properly built 1911 rather than a base model with paint on it.

The Build Underneath the Finish

A 1911 at this price point usually arrives plain, and the owner spends the next two years adding the parts that make it comfortable. The Auto-Ordnance 1911 Northern Lights comes with them fitted: an extended beavertail grip safety so a high grip does not get bitten by the hammer, a skeletonized hammer, front cocking serrations and decorative slide cuts, and a 5 inch barrel in the Government pattern the design was balanced around.

The grips are black G10, a resin laminate that does not swell in humidity, does not crack, and does not wear smooth the way wood eventually does. Against the teal frame the contrast is the whole point of the design, and G10 holds a texture indefinitely, which matters more on a 45 than on anything smaller.

A note for anyone weighing this against the stainless version. Mechanically they are the same pistol; the difference is entirely the finish and the grips. The stainless Cerakote model carries night sights, which the coloured editions generally do not, so if the pistol is going to live on a nightstand rather than a range bag that is the specification worth checking before you decide on colour.

Why it is worth considering

  • Extended beavertail and skeletonized hammer fitted from the factory
  • Black G10 grips that will not swell, crack or wear smooth
  • Northern Lights Cerakote, harder wearing and more corrosion resistant than bluing
  • Front cocking serrations and decorative slide cuts
  • Government-pattern 5 inch barrel
  • Standard 1911 parts throughout, so the aftermarket fits

Who it suits

The Auto-Ordnance 1911 Northern Lights suits the buyer who wants a built 1911 and does not want a black one. Every upgrade on it is something that would otherwise be added over time and at cost, and the finish is durable enough that choosing colour does not mean choosing a safe queen. If you want the same pistol in something more conventional, the stainless Cerakote version is mechanically identical and adds night sights.

Ammunition, Magazines and Transfer

The Auto-Ordnance 1911 Northern Lights runs standard 45 ACP. For practice, 230 grain round nose full metal jacket is the default and what the platform feeds best; for defensive use, a quality jacketed hollow point in 185 or 230 grain. Single-stack 1911s can be particular about hollow point profiles, so run a box or two of your chosen load through it before relying on it.

Magazines are standard single-stack 1911 pattern, so the entire aftermarket fits and good magazines cost very little. Manufacturer information is published by Auto-Ordnance. Compare this pistol with the stainless Cerakote version, which adds night sights, and the plain GI Spec, browse our full Auto-Ordnance range, or the handgun catalog.

All firearm orders ship to a licensed FFL dealer for transfer, and MAG5 Firearms will coordinate the paperwork with the dealer of your choice.

One practical point about carrying a brightly finished pistol: holster fit is identical to any other Government-pattern 1911, because the Cerakote adds no meaningful thickness. Anything cut for a 5 inch 1911 will take it. The only real consideration is that a coloured finish shows holster wear at the muzzle and the slide corners sooner than black does, which some owners consider character and others do not.
