Description
The ATI Cavalry SX in 20 gauge is the configuration that makes the most sense of this design. The aluminum receiver already makes the gun light; putting a 20 gauge barrel set on it produces an upland shotgun that a smaller-framed shooter can carry all day and a larger one barely notices. Twenty-six inch barrels keep it quick between the hands in cover, and nothing has been left off: ejectors, a single selective trigger, five chokes and real Turkish walnut.
Why 20 Gauge, and Why This One
Twenty gauge is the answer for most upland hunting and a large share of general bird shooting. The shot payload is smaller than 12, which nobody notices at the ranges most birds are actually taken, and the recoil and the weight are both meaningfully lower, which everybody notices by the end of a long day. In a gun built around a 7075 aluminum receiver, that advantage compounds.
The ATI Cavalry SX pairs that with the equipment level you would normally pay considerably more for. The receiver carries a laser-engraved pattern with a silver finish against blued barrels, the stock and forend are oil-finished Turkish walnut, and the gun is hand fitted at the factory rather than simply assembled.

A note on the walnut: because it is real wood with an oil finish rather than a printed or laminated stock, the grain on your gun will not match the grain on any photograph, including ours. Some guns come through with genuinely striking figure and some are plainer. That variation is a property of the material, not a defect, and an oil finish has the advantage that it can be renewed at home with a rag and a bottle rather than sent away for refinishing.
Why it is worth considering
- 20 gauge on an aluminum receiver, about as light as an over/under gets
- 26 inch barrels, quick between the hands in close cover
- Ejectors rather than extractors, which genuinely speeds reloads
- Single selective trigger with a barrel selector
- Five interchangeable chokes supplied, so no immediate extra purchase
- Oil-finished Turkish walnut that can be renewed at home
Who it suits
The ATI Cavalry SX in 20 gauge suits the upland hunter, the smaller-framed or younger shooter, and anyone who has concluded that a 12 gauge is more gun than their shooting requires. It is also a good first over/under: everything is included, the price does not punish a learning scratch on the stock, and the handling characteristics are the ones that teach a new shooter to swing properly rather than muscle the gun around.

Ammunition, Chokes and Transfer
The 3 inch chamber on the ATI Cavalry SX covers the full spread of 20 gauge loads. For upland work, 7/8 ounce to 1 ounce field loads in 6 or 7-1/2 shot handle nearly everything that flushes; 3 inch magnum loads are there for decoying ducks or a longer shot at a pheasant. A light gun will let you know when you fire the heavy stuff, so most shooters find themselves keeping magnums for the occasions that genuinely need them.
The five supplied chokes let you match the gun to the day: open constrictions for birds flushing close in cover, tighter tubes for anything at distance. Changing them takes a moment with the supplied wrench and does more for a day’s shooting than almost any other adjustment. Manufacturer information is published by American Tactical.
