Description
The ATI Cavalry SX is an over/under that weighs just over six pounds, which is the number that defines it. A field gun you carry for five hours and shoot for five minutes should be light, and most 12 gauge over/unders are not. This one gets there with a 7075 aluminum receiver instead of steel, and it does not give up the things that matter: ejectors, a single selective trigger, five chokes and real Turkish walnut.
The Aluminum Receiver and What It Buys
The receiver is machined from high-grade 7075 aluminum and carries an intricate laser-engraved pattern with a silver finish that sets off the blued barrels. Aluminum is why the ATI Cavalry SX comes in at just over six pounds where a steel-receivered 12 gauge over/under of the same barrel length typically runs seven and a half or more.
The trade is recoil: a lighter gun transmits more of it. With standard field loads and the kind of round count an upland day involves, that is a fair exchange for a gun you actually enjoy carrying. If you intend to shoot two hundred clays in an afternoon, a heavier gun will treat you better, and that is worth knowing before you buy rather than after.

A note on the walnut: because it is real wood with an oil finish rather than a printed or laminated stock, the grain on your gun will not match the grain on any photograph, including ours. Some guns come through with genuinely striking figure and some are plainer. That variation is a property of the material, not a defect, and an oil finish has the advantage that it can be renewed at home with a rag and a bottle rather than sent away for refinishing.
Why it is worth considering
- Just over six pounds, unusually light for a 12 gauge over/under
- 7075 aluminum receiver with laser-engraved detailing
- Ejectors rather than extractors, which genuinely speeds reloads
- Single selective trigger, the setup most shooters prefer
- Five interchangeable chokes supplied, so no immediate extra purchase
- Oil-finished Turkish walnut that can be renewed at home
Who it suits
The ATI Cavalry SX suits the upland hunter who walks a long way for a small number of shots, and anyone who has decided their current over/under is heavier than it needs to be. It is a field gun first: light enough to carry all day, well enough equipped that nothing has to be added to it, and priced so that a scratch on the stock from a barbed wire fence is not a tragedy. Clays shooters putting up high volume should look at something heavier.

Ammunition, Chokes and Transfer
The 3 inch chamber on the ATI Cavalry SX means the full range of 12 gauge loads is available to you. For upland work, 1 ounce to 1-1/8 ounce field loads in 6 or 7-1/2 shot cover nearly everything; for waterfowl, 3 inch steel loads work but bear in mind that a six pound gun will let you know about them. Given the weight, most shooters are happier keeping the heavy stuff for the occasions that genuinely need it.
The five supplied chokes let you match the gun to the day: open constrictions for birds flushing close in cover, tighter tubes for decoying ducks or passing doves. Changing them takes a moment with the supplied wrench and makes more difference to a day’s shooting than almost any other adjustment. Manufacturer information is published by American Tactical.
