Description
The Black Rain Spec15 556 Black is a 16 inch AR-15 rifle in 5.56 NATO from Black Rain Ordnance, built on the forged Spec15 receiver set in a black anodized finish. It is the straightforward, working-rifle model in the Black Rain lineup.
Black Rain Spec15 556 Black Overview
The Spec15 is the foundation of the Black Rain lineup: a no-frills AR-15 built on the same forged receivers as the Spec+ rifles, in plain black, at a lower price. It is a solid base for a first AR or a rifle you plan to upgrade over time.
Receivers and Finish
The upper and lower are Spec15 forged aluminum receivers, the strongest common way to make AR receivers. They wear a black hard coat anodized finish that is tough, low glare and matches nearly any optic or accessory you add.
Barrel and Caliber
The 16 inch 4150 chrome moly M4 profile barrel is chambered for 5.56 NATO and also fires .223 Remington. That length is handy indoors and in a truck, yet long enough to keep good velocity at 200 to 300 yards. The M4 profile also accepts common accessories made for that contour.
Bolt Carrier and Parts
The Spec15 bolt carrier group, buffer and spring follow mil-spec dimensions, so spare parts are easy to find and replace. That makes the rifle simple to maintain and simple to upgrade with a new trigger or charging handle later.
Handguard, Trigger and Furniture
The 12 in. M-LOK handguard gives room for a light and a sling mount without adding much weight. The mil-spec G.I. trigger is reliable and easy to upgrade later. The adjustable B5 SOPMOD stock gives a wide, comfortable cheek weld, and a polymer grip completes the furniture.
Adding Optics
The flat top upper takes a red dot, an LPVO or a magnified scope. Plan on adding an optic or backup iron sights before your first range trip.
Choosing Ammunition
For practice, 55 grain FMJ is the most affordable choice. For accuracy work, try 69 or 77 grain match loads. For hunting coyotes and other varmints, choose a bullet built to expand. Brass cased ammunition from a known maker is the most reliable choice in any AR.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Clean and oil the bolt every few hundred rounds and check the gas key screws now and then. Most failures in a direct impingement rifle trace back to a dry bolt, so lubrication matters more than scrubbing.
State Laws
Some states limit AR-15 rifles or magazines over 10 rounds. Check your state and local laws before you order. Pennsylvania buyers can transfer this rifle at our Collegeville shop or at any FFL.
