Description
The Black Rain Spec+ SSP Black is a 16 inch AR-15 rifle in 5.56 NATO from the Black Rain Ordnance Spec+ Series, finished in Armor Black. This listing is UPC 681565230714. It ships with a 30 round magazine, weighs about 7 lb 8 oz, and measures 34 in. overall.
Black Rain Spec+ SSP Black Overview
The SSP is the upgraded rifle in the Black Rain Spec+ Series. It keeps the forged receivers and 4150V barrel of the line, then adds a nickel boron bolt carrier, a 3.5 lb drop-in trigger, a Magpul MOE SL stock and an oversized charging handle latch.
Receiver and Finish
The upper and lower are Spec15 forged aluminum receivers, the strongest common way to make AR receivers. This rifle wears Armor Black Cerakote, a thin ceramic coating that is tough, low glare and resists solvents, and it matches nearly any optic or accessory you add. The 16 inch barrel has a black nitride finish and a threaded muzzle.
Barrel and Gas System
The 16 inch 4150V Chromoly barrel is the common choice for a general purpose AR: handy indoors and in a truck, yet long enough to keep good velocity at 200 to 300 yards. The rifle runs direct impingement with a .750 low profile gas block that sits under the handguard. It is not adjustable, which keeps the system simple and reliable with standard 55 and 62 grain loads.
Bolt Carrier Group
The bolt carrier group has a nickel boron coating. It is hard and very slick, so it needs less oil than a phosphate carrier and wipes clean quickly after a range day. Keep a light coat of lube on it anyway, especially in dusty conditions.
Handguard, Trigger and Furniture
The 15 in. M-LOK slim handguard gives room for a light, a sling mount and a forward hand position. The BRO 3.5 lb drop-in trigger is a real step up from a mil-spec unit, with a lighter, cleaner break that helps with precise shots. The Magpul MOE grip and MOE SL stock are comfortable and adjust for length of pull, and the forged charging handle has an oversized Tac-Latch that is easy to work under an optic.
Adding Optics
The flat top upper takes a red dot, an LPVO or a magnified scope. The rifle comes without sights, so plan on adding an optic or backup iron sights before your first range trip. A red dot with a 1x to 6x LPVO covers most home defense, training and hunting roles.
Choosing Ammunition
For practice, 55 grain FMJ is the most affordable choice. For accuracy work, try 69 or 77 grain match loads. For hunting coyotes and other varmints, choose a bullet built to expand. Brass cased ammunition from a known maker is the most reliable choice in any AR.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Clean and oil the bolt every few hundred rounds and check the gas key screws now and then. Most failures in a direct impingement rifle trace back to a dry bolt, so lubrication matters more than scrubbing.
State Laws
Some states limit AR-15 rifles or magazines over 10 rounds. Check your state and local laws before you order. Pennsylvania buyers can transfer this rifle at our Collegeville shop or at any FFL.

Before You Buy
Federal law requires this rifle to ship to a licensed FFL dealer for transfer with a background check. Our distributor listed this rifle with a nickel boron bolt carrier and 3.5 lb trigger, which matches the Black Rain spec sheet. Black Rain states that Spec+ rifles currently ship with a castle flash suppressor rather than the A2 flash hider seen in some older photos, and that a Magpul MBUS Pro offset front sight may need modification to fit.

The Black Rain Spec+ SSP Black is a great fit for shooters who want an upgraded, ready-to-run 5.56 AR-15 with a better trigger and bolt carrier out of the box.
