Description

The Four Peaks AKSA Arms S2 is a Turkish-built inertia-driven semi-automatic 12 gauge that costs a fraction of what the established inertia guns command, and gives up considerably less than the price gap suggests. The receiver is machined from 7075-T6 billet aluminum, the 28 inch barrel is 4140 steel with an oxidation-proof chrome plating, and the 3 inch chamber handles everything from light target loads through heavy field ammunition.

Why an Inertia Action Matters

An inertia-driven shotgun does not tap gas from the barrel to cycle the action. Instead it uses the rearward movement of the whole gun against a spring in the bolt, which means there is no gas port, no piston, no gas seals and no gas cylinder for fouling to build up in. The practical consequence is a shotgun that stays clean far longer than a gas gun, strips in seconds, and does not care much what it has been shooting.

The trade is recoil: an inertia gun transmits more of it to the shooter than a gas gun does, because gas operation bleeds some of that energy off to run the action. The Four Peaks AKSA Arms S2 addresses this with an oversized rubber buttpad, and for field shooting — where the round count per day is low and the walking distance is high — most shooters find the trade worth making.

The S2 is also offered with a Turkish walnut stock and in other barrel lengths, and the wider AKSA S-series includes shorter-barrelled configurations. This is the 28 inch black synthetic version, which is the configuration most buyers want for waterfowl, dove and general field work — long enough to swing smoothly on crossing birds, and finished in a way that shrugs off weather.

Why it is worth considering

  • Inertia action with no gas system to clean, foul or maintain
  • 7075-T6 billet aluminum receiver, machined rather than cast
  • Chrome-plated 4140 steel barrel built for wet-weather shooting
  • 3 inch chamber, so light target loads and heavy field loads both run
  • Fiber optic front sight that stands out in poor light
  • Synthetic stock and oversized recoil pad, built to be used rather than admired

Who it suits

The Four Peaks AKSA Arms S2 suits the shooter who wants an inertia gun and does not want to spend four figures getting one. It is the right choice for waterfowl and field work where the gun gets wet, muddy and neglected, and where a gas system would be the first thing to complain. It is not a target gun and does not pretend to be one, but for the money there is very little that will outlast it in bad conditions.

Ammunition and Care for the Four Peaks AKSA Arms S2

The 3 inch chamber means this shotgun covers the full practical range of 12 gauge loads. Inertia guns do have one characteristic worth knowing: because the action is driven by recoil rather than gas, very light target loads sometimes lack the energy to cycle reliably, particularly in a new gun before the parts have worn in. Start with standard 1-1/8 ounce field loads through the first few boxes and the action will smooth out. Heavy waterfowl and turkey loads present no difficulty at all.

Cleaning is the easy part. With no gas system there is no piston to scrub and no gas ports to clear — wipe the bolt and rails, run a brush through the chrome-plated bore, and the gun is done.
