Description
The Taurus Tracker 44 Magnum 4 Inch is the .44 that most people can actually live with. It is built on the medium Tracker frame rather than the big one, it holds five rounds instead of six, and the barrel is ported from the factory. All three of those decisions point the same way: keep the gun a sensible size and weight, and use engineering rather than mass to deal with the recoil.
Part number 2-440041TKR, UPC 725327351238, nineteen in stock. Sports South is currently out of them.
What the Taurus Tracker 44 Magnum 4 Inch is built from
- Five-shot medium Tracker frame in .44 Remington Magnum
- 4-inch ported barrel with a full underlug and a vented rib
- Matte black oxide finish on barrel, cylinder and frame
- Taurus Ribber grip – the soft ridged rubber one, not a hard panel
- Adjustable rear sight over a fixed front
- Transfer bar safety with an exposed hammer for single action
- Double action / single action

Five rounds, not six – and why the porting matters
- The Taurus Tracker 44 Magnum 4 Inch drops to five chambers, and that lets the cylinder walls stay thick on a medium frame. A six-shot .44 needs a bigger cylinder and a bigger gun to go around it
- The ports cut in the top of the barrel bleed gas upward, which holds the muzzle down. On a full-house .44 load that is the difference between a comfortable cylinder and a punishing one
- The trade is noise. Ported barrels are loud, and they are much louder than usual from beside or behind the shooter. Indoors without hearing protection this is genuinely unpleasant
- Ports also throw gas and unburnt powder upward, so keep your support hand thumb well back and do not shoot it from a close retention position
- The Ribber grip soaks up a lot more than a hard rubber panel does. It is not pretty, and it works

Feed it .44 Special for practice
The Taurus Tracker 44 Magnum 4 Inch will also take .44 Special, and on a gun this size that is not a footnote – it is the difference between a hundred rounds in an afternoon and twenty. .44 Special runs at roughly a third of the pressure, costs less, and lets you work on trigger control instead of flinch management. Save the magnum loads for the shots that need them.
Both cartridges are dimensioned and pressure-rated by SAAMI, and any factory ammunition will be built to those limits.
Where it sits against the other big-bore Taurus revolvers
The stainless Model 44 with the same 4-inch barrel is the six-shot large-frame version – more gun, more weight, one more round. If you want a hunting revolver rather than a field or trail gun, the Raging Hunter in .44 with the 5-inch barrel has an optic rail and a much heavier barrel. On the medium frame in a lighter calibre, the Tracker 627 in .357 Magnum is the seven-shot equivalent, and the 6.5-inch Tracker 627 stretches it out for range work.
Why the Taurus Tracker 44 Magnum 4 Inch earns its place
- A .44 Magnum you will actually carry, rather than one that lives in the safe because it weighs three pounds
- Factory porting and a Ribber grip do more for shootability than any amount of extra steel
- 4 inches is the right barrel for a trail gun – enough velocity to matter, short enough to clear a holster
- Adjustable sights on the Taurus Tracker 44 Magnum 4 Inch, so you can zero it for the load you actually carry
- Nineteen in stock here while the distributor is out
Be clear about what five rounds means. If you are buying this as a defensive handgun, five rounds of .44 Magnum is a small amount of ammunition and reloading a revolver under stress is a skill that takes work. That is a fair reason to buy something else.
Where the Taurus Tracker 44 Magnum 4 Inch makes complete sense is as a woods gun. Hiking, fishing, riding fence, running a trapline – somewhere you want serious power against an animal, worn on a belt all day, and you are not expecting a gunfight. For that job the medium frame and the porting are exactly right, and the price leaves room for a good holster and a case of ammunition.
