Description

The Taurus 44 Magnum is the large-frame six-shooter the company has been building for decades, and the four-inch ported stainless version is the most useful configuration of it. Six rounds of .44 Remington Magnum, a heavy barrel with a full-length underlug, ports at the muzzle and an adjustable rear sight, on a frame with enough mass to make the cartridge behave.

The Taurus 44 Magnum is a woods gun, a bear-country sidearm and a very satisfying range revolver, and at four inches it is short enough to wear on a belt all day rather than only carry to the bench.

What the Taurus 44 Magnum offers

  • The Taurus 44 Magnum holds six rounds, where most modern big-bore revolvers give you five
  • 4-inch heavy barrel with a full-length underlug, putting weight forward where it steadies the sights
  • Ports at the muzzle that vent gas upward and cut the muzzle rise between shots
  • Matte stainless barrel, cylinder and frame, which is the right finish for a gun that goes outdoors
  • Adjustable rear sight, so you can zero properly for a chosen bullet weight
  • Black finger-grooved rubber grip that spreads a genuinely heavy recoil impulse
  • .44 Special chambers and fires in it, which makes practice far cheaper and much more pleasant

A correction worth making on this listing

  • Our old product title called this an M44 Tracker with five rounds. The distributor record and the frame stamp say otherwise
  • This is the large-frame Model 44, and it is a six-shot revolver. The Tracker is a different, medium-frame five-shot gun
  • We have corrected the description rather than the historic title, so the old name still finds the page
  • If you specifically want the five-shot Tracker, tell us and we will source it rather than sell you this by accident
  • The practical difference is size and weight: the Taurus 44 Magnum is the heavier gun, and it is the more comfortable one to shoot
  • Six rounds also means a standard .44 speedloader pattern rather than a five-shot one

.44 Remington Magnum and .44 Special are both standardised cartridges with dimensions and pressure ceilings published by SAAMI. The Magnum case is longer, which is why the Special drops into this cylinder and the Magnum will not fit a .44 Special revolver. That length difference is also why you should brush the chambers after a session of Specials.

One honest point about the ports. They work, and they are loud. Fired indoors or next to another shooter on a covered line, a ported .44 is genuinely unpleasant to be near, and the gas comes up past your line of sight in low light. Outdoors, in the woods, where a Taurus 44 Magnum actually earns its keep, none of that matters and the reduction in muzzle rise is worth having.

Why this revolver earns its place

  • Six shots of .44 Magnum, which is one more than most of the competition
  • Enough weight and barrel to make full-power loads controllable rather than punishing
  • The Taurus 44 Magnum in stainless handles rain, sweat and river crossings without complaint
  • Adjustable sights, so you can zero for the heavy hard-cast loads that make it a bear gun
  • .44 Special for cheap practice out of the same cylinder
  • A four-inch barrel that will actually ride on a belt, unlike the long-barrelled hunting guns

Hikers and hunters in bear country, woods carriers, handgun hunters working at close range, and shooters who simply want a proper .44. The Taurus 44 Magnum is the sensible middle of the big-bore market: more gun than a .357 and far less punishing than a .454 or a .500.

If you want a longer barrel and a factory optics rail, the Raging Hunter in .44 is the hunting build, with a two-tone version and a longer 6.75-inch in the same cartridge.

If .44 is more than you need, the eight-shot Taurus 608 and the seven-shot Tracker 627 cover .357 Magnum in lighter packages.

Every Taurus 44 Magnum ships with the factory case, the manual and a lock. Transfers go to your FFL and our end of the paperwork is done the same day.
