Description

The Canik SFx Rival 9mm is what happens when a manufacturer decides to stop charging extra for the parts you were going to buy anyway. Model HG6610TN is a full-size competition pistol with a 5 inch barrel, an 18+1 magazine, a ported and serrated slide in Rival Gray, and a matching frame picked out in gold. It weighs 29.5 ounces and measures 8.1 inches end to end.

What sets the Canik SFx Rival 9mm apart is the case it arrives in. Two 18-round magazines, three optic interface plates, an external magwell, a holster, a magazine loader, spare fiber optic rods, grip backstraps, magazine release extensions, a punch and a toolkit. The gun is competition ready in the literal sense: you can take it out of the box, bolt on a dot, and shoot a match that afternoon.

Canik has spent the last decade proving that a striker-fired pistol at this price can have a trigger worth keeping, and the Rival is the sharpest example of it. If you are looking at a 1,200 dollar competition gun and wondering whether the difference is real, shoot one of these first.

Features of the Canik SFx Rival 9mm

  • 5 inch black steel barrel with a ported slide, which cuts muzzle rise noticeably on a 29.5 ounce gun
  • 18+1 capacity with two 18-round magazines in the case
  • Rival Gray ported and serrated slide, cut for a red dot
  • Rival Gray polymer frame with gold accents, a high beavertail and a Picatinny rail
  • Fully ambidextrous controls
  • Fiber optic front sight with a click-adjustable rear
  • Three optic interface plates for the common footprints
  • 8.1 inches long, 5.7 inches tall, 1.41 inches wide, 29.5 ounces

Rival Gray with gold accents, and what it actually looks like

  • The slide and frame are both Rival Gray, a flat tungsten-toned finish rather than a silver or a nickel look
  • The gold accents are the trigger, the safety plunger, the takedown pin, the slide cuts and the magazine floorplate
  • It is a two-tone gun in person, and the gold reads closer to bronze than to yellow under indoor lighting
  • The grip panels are a coarse stippled texture molded into the frame, not an applied tape or a separate insert
  • If Rival Gray with gold accents is not your taste, the same pistol is made in a black and gold Dark Side finish

The fiber optic front sight and the adjustable rear

The fiber optic front sight is the right choice for a gun built around speed. A fiber rod gathers ambient light and glows, so the front sight jumps out of a cluttered background faster than a plain black post does, which is exactly what you want when the target changes every two seconds. Canik ships spare rods in the case, because fiber rods do get broken and replacing one is a two-minute job.

The rear is click-adjustable for both windage and elevation, which is unusual at this price and genuinely useful if you shoot more than one load. It also means you can zero the irons properly rather than living with whatever the factory sent, and then mount a dot on top knowing the backup sights are honest.

An optics ready competition pistol out of the box

The slide is cut for an optic and Canik includes three interface plates covering the Shield RMSc, the Trijicon RMR, the Leupold DeltaPoint Pro and the Vortex Venom patterns. That is the whole point of an optics ready competition pistol: the plate question is answered before you buy, and you are not waiting two weeks for a 40 dollar piece of aluminum to arrive.

The ported slide matters here too. Porting bleeds gas upward through the slide cuts, which pushes the muzzle down against the recoil impulse. On a 29.5 ounce 9mm the effect is not dramatic, but it is enough to keep a red dot in the window between shots rather than letting it swing out of view, and that is the difference between tracking the dot and hunting for it.

Magazines that fit the Canik SFx Rival 9mm

Two 18-round magazines come in the case. Spares are the Canik TP9 full-size 18-round magazine, which is the factory part and which we keep in depth. For a match gun, the TTI Combat full-size 18-round magazine in bronze is worth a look, and the bronze basepad happens to match the gold accents on this pistol rather than fighting them.

An important fitment warning. Canik magazines are not interchangeable across the whole range. Magazines for the TP9 Elite, the TP9 Compact and the TP9 Sub Compact will not work in this pistol, because those guns have shorter grip frames. Anything you buy for the SFx Rival needs to say full size. If you are not sure, ask us before you order rather than after.

What comes in the case

Hard case, two 18-round magazines, a magazine loader, an external magwell, a holster, a Canik punch, a toolkit, a cleaning kit, three optic interface plates, spare fiber optic rods, interchangeable grip backstraps, magazine release extensions, a gun lock and the manual. Canik publishes the full list on the official SFx Rival page.

If you need a lower capacity for your state, the SFx Rival Grey in 10-round is the same pistol in the same finish. If you prefer black and gold, look at the SFx Rival Dark Side, and the SFx Rival Grey MO2 is the updated optic-mount version.

Why this firearm earns its place

  • A genuine competition package rather than a base gun with a competition sticker on it
  • The trigger is the reason Canik keeps winning comparisons at this price, and the Rival gets the best version of it
  • Three optic plates included, so the dot you already own almost certainly mounts
  • Ambidextrous controls out of the box, which left-handed shooters normally pay a gunsmith for
  • Click-adjustable rear sight, fiber optic front and spare rods, so the irons are usable rather than decorative

This suits the USPSA or Steel Challenge shooter who wants to compete without spending twelve hundred dollars, the shooter who has decided on a red dot and does not want to source plates, and anyone who simply wants a full-size range gun that is pleasant to shoot. At 29.5 ounces with a 5 inch barrel it is not a carry pistol, and we would not pretend otherwise.

Every firearm we ship goes to a licensed dealer in your state for the transfer and the background check. Magazine capacity is limited in some states, so check your local rules before you order and call us if you want help confirming.
