Smith Wesson 15-22 Sport Optic Compliant compliant 22 LR AR pattern rifle with red green dot optic

The Smith Wesson 15-22 Sport Optic Compliant is the compliant configuration of the optics-ready M&P15-22 Sport, supplied with a factory-mounted M&P red and green dot and a ten-round magazine for states with capacity and feature restrictions.

Smith Wesson 15-22 Sport Optic Compliant An AR That Shoots 22 LR

The M&P15-22 is not an AR-15 with a conversion kit in it. It is a purpose-built 22 LR rifle that copies the AR-15 layout, dimensions and controls, which means everything you learn on it transfers to a centerfire rifle while the ammunition costs a fraction as much.

Because it is designed around the rimfire cartridge rather than adapted to it, the rifle is light at roughly 4.8 pounds and it works reliably. Conversion kits in centerfire uppers are notoriously fussy; this is not one.

The controls sit exactly where an AR shooter expects them. Functioning charging handle, receiver-mounted safety lever, shell deflector, magazine release and bolt catch all operate the same way, and the 6-position CAR stock adjusts to fit shooters of any size.

The Included MP-100 Optic

The optic is the MP-100, a one-piece tube red and green dot with a 4.0 MOA round reticle and variable intensity in both colours. Eye relief is unlimited, adjustments click at a quarter MOA at 100 yards, and flip-open lens caps and a CR1620 battery are included. It mounts to standard Picatinny rails, so it can move to another rifle later.

Red and green matters more than it sounds. Green is easier for many eyes to pick up against foliage and in daylight; red draws less battery and is gentler at night. Having both in one optic means you are not locked into a compromise.

Underneath, the rifle keeps the 10 inch M&P slim handguard with Magpul M-LOK and the 2 inch M-LOK rail panel, a functioning charging handle and the 2-position receiver-mounted safety.

Zeroing the Dot

A red dot on a rimfire rifle is worth zeroing carefully, because 22 LR drops far more than a centerfire round and the difference between a 25 yard and a 50 yard zero is significant. Twenty-five yards is the usual choice, and it keeps the point of impact within about an inch of the dot from the muzzle out to roughly 60 yards.

Adjustments click at a quarter MOA at 100 yards, which is a quarter inch at that distance and a sixteenth of an inch at 25. That means a lot of clicks for a small correction at close range, so shoot a group, measure it, and make one deliberate adjustment rather than chasing single shots.

Once zeroed, leave the caps on between sessions and check the mount screws occasionally. A dot that has shifted is far harder to diagnose than one that has simply gone flat.

Why Buyers Choose the Smith Wesson 15-22 Sport Optic Compliant

Rimfire practice costs a small fraction of centerfire, and a rifle that handles identically to an AR-15 turns that cheap practice into training rather than plinking.

The M&P15-22 has been in production since 2009 and has one of the strongest reliability reputations of any semi-automatic 22 rifle, which is not a low bar to clear given how fussy the cartridge can be.

Recoil is essentially nonexistent, which makes this an excellent first rifle for a new or younger shooter and a good diagnostic tool for an experienced one.

Magazines, parts and accessories are widely available and inexpensive, and the M-LOK handguard accepts the same accessories as any modern rifle.

Who Should Buy It

The Smith Wesson 15-22 Sport Optic Compliant suits shooters in states with capacity or feature restrictions who want a complete rifle and optic package, families teaching new shooters, and anyone wanting inexpensive AR-pattern practice. Check your state and local rules before ordering, since restrictions vary considerably.
