Description

The Smith Wesson 15-22 Sport 25 Round is the standard M&P15-22 Sport, a purpose-built 22 LR rifle that handles exactly like an AR-15, with a threaded 16.5 inch barrel, Magpul MBUS folding sights and a 25-round magazine.
Smith Wesson 15-22 Sport 25 Round An AR That Shoots 22 LR
The M&P15-22 is not an AR-15 with a conversion kit in it. It is a purpose-built 22 LR rifle that copies the AR-15 layout, dimensions and controls, which means everything you learn on it transfers to a centerfire rifle while the ammunition costs a fraction as much.
Because it is designed around the rimfire cartridge rather than adapted to it, the rifle is light at roughly 4.8 pounds and it works reliably. Conversion kits in centerfire uppers are notoriously fussy; this is not one.
The controls sit exactly where an AR shooter expects them. Functioning charging handle, receiver-mounted safety lever, shell deflector, magazine release and bolt catch all operate the same way, and the 6-position CAR stock adjusts to fit shooters of any size.
Handguard, Sights and Barrel
A 10 inch M&P slim handguard carries the Magpul M-LOK system, so lights, bipods, hand stops and rail sections attach directly without removing the handguard. Smith and Wesson include a 2 inch M-LOK rail panel with the rifle.
Magpul MBUS folding sights are fitted front and rear. They are among the most widely used backup sights on the market, they fold flat when you add an optic, and they are removable if you want the rail clear.
The 16.5 inch carbon steel barrel keeps the rifle legal as a rifle without a stamp and gives 22 LR every bit of velocity it can use. Beyond about 16 inches a 22 LR gains nothing, so this is the practical sweet spot.
Feeding a Rimfire Semi-Automatic
22 LR is a wonderful cartridge and an inconsistent one. The case is thin, the priming compound is spun into the rim by hand-scale tolerances, and the amount of energy available to cycle an action varies more between brands and even between lots than any centerfire round does.
In practice this means high-velocity ammunition generally cycles most reliably, standard velocity is often more accurate, and bulk pack ammunition will occasionally produce a dud or a soft strike. None of that indicates a fault in the rifle. Buying two or three brands and settling on whichever runs cleanest is time well spent before committing to a case.
Cleaning also matters more than on a centerfire rifle. Rimfire priming compound and unjacketed lead build residue quickly, and a bolt that has not been wiped down in two thousand rounds will start short-stroking regardless of what you feed it.

Why Buyers Choose the Smith Wesson 15-22 Sport 25 Round
Rimfire practice costs a small fraction of centerfire, and a rifle that handles identically to an AR-15 turns that cheap practice into training rather than plinking.
The M&P15-22 has been in production since 2009 and has one of the strongest reliability reputations of any semi-automatic 22 rifle, which is not a low bar to clear given how fussy the cartridge can be.
Recoil is essentially nonexistent, which makes this an excellent first rifle for a new or younger shooter and a good diagnostic tool for an experienced one.
Magazines, parts and accessories are widely available and inexpensive, and the M-LOK handguard accepts the same accessories as any modern rifle.
Who Should Buy It
The Smith Wesson 15-22 Sport 25 Round suits anyone wanting cheap practice on an AR-pattern rifle, new and younger shooters learning on a rifle with no recoil, and small game and pest shooters. The photographs show a thread protector at the muzzle, though neither distributor record states the thread pitch, so ask us before you order a muzzle device. A suppressor is a National Firearms Act item requiring ATF approval and MAG5 does not sell them. Note that 22 LR reliability varies by brand, so test a few before buying in bulk.

Before You Order A Smith Wesson 15-22 Sport 25 Round
Distributor restrictions on this SKU: no direct shipment to Rhode Island or Washington, and no sale to Illinois under PICA, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands or Guam. Several states also restrict AR-pattern rifles by feature or magazine capacity, so tell us the destination and we will check before taking the order.
Buy the magazines and the ammunition for your Smith Wesson 15-22 Sport 25 Round at the same time. The factory 25-round M&P15-22 magazine is the only one worth owning for this rifle, and Armscor 22 LR 36gr HVHP is what we have in depth right now. The Smith Wesson 15-22 Sport 25 Round is no fussier than any other rimfire, but rimfire itself is fussy: buy one box of two or three brands before you buy a case of any of them.
Other versions of the Smith Wesson 15-22 Sport 25 Round we carry: the Optic model with a dot already fitted, the MOE SL with the Magpul furniture package, and the ten-round version for capacity-restricted states.
Rimfire cartridge standards for the Smith Wesson 15-22 Sport 25 Round are published by the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers Institute; the factory page is at Smith and Wesson.
Every firearm we list ships to your chosen FFL and is transferred there after a background check.
