Description
The Commander length is the sensible compromise nobody talks about enough. The Auto-Ordnance 1911A1 Commander runs a 4.25 inch barrel against the 5 inch of a Government model, which takes three quarters of an inch off the muzzle end and makes the pistol noticeably easier to carry without touching the grip — the part that actually determines whether a 1911 conceals.
Why Commander Length Works
A full-size 1911 is 8.5 inches of pistol at the Government length and closer to 8.75 with the frame. Cutting the barrel and slide to 4.25 inches brings the Auto-Ordnance 1911A1 Commander down to 8.5 inches overall while leaving the frame and the magazine well full size. That is the right trade: the grip is what prints under a shirt and what your hand needs to find under pressure, and shortening it makes a 1911 harder to shoot and no easier to hide.
The shorter slide also cycles slightly faster, which some shooters notice as a marginally sharper recoil impulse. With 45 ACP in an all-steel pistol, marginal is the operative word — this is still one of the gentlest full-power cartridges to shoot in a gun of this weight.

One thing worth knowing about Commander-length 1911s in general: recoil springs wear faster than on a Government model because the slide travels the same distance over a shorter spring. It is not a fault, simply a consequence of the geometry. Replacing the recoil spring every few thousand rounds is cheap insurance and will keep the pistol running indefinitely.
Why it is worth considering
- 4.25 inch barrel and 8.5 inch overall length, easier to carry than a Government model
- Full-size frame and grip retained, which is what actually matters for shooting
- Drift adjustable rear sight for windage
- Firing pin block, so the pistol is drop safe
- All-steel construction, which keeps 45 ACP recoil mild
- Standard 1911 magazines and parts throughout
Who it suits
The Auto-Ordnance 1911A1 Commander suits the shooter who wants to carry a 1911 rather than only shoot one, and who has worked out that shortening the grip is the wrong way to do it. It is also a good choice for anyone who finds a 5 inch Government model a little muzzle-heavy. If concealment is not a consideration at all, the full-length GI Spec costs less and gives a slightly longer sight radius.

Ammunition, Magazines and Transfer
The Auto-Ordnance 1911A1 Commander runs standard 45 ACP. For practice, 230 grain round nose full metal jacket is what the platform feeds best; for defensive use, a quality jacketed hollow point in 185 or 230 grain. Commander-length 1911s are slightly more particular about hollow point profiles than Government models because the feed cycle is shorter, so run a box or two of your chosen carry load through it before trusting it.
Magazines are standard single-stack 1911 pattern and work in either barrel length. Holsters cut for a Commander are widely available, and a Government holster will generally take a Commander with a little extra room at the muzzle.
