Description
The Taurus 692 Vent Rib is the long-barrelled member of the two-cylinder convertible family, catalogued as 2-692061. Seven rounds on a medium frame, a 6.50-inch vent-rib barrel in matte black, and two cylinders in the box: one for 357 Magnum and 38 Special, one for 9mm Luger.
Worth noting the barrel is vent ribbed rather than ported, which is a different thing entirely. The slots you can see run through the rib above the bore, not into it, so they lighten the barrel and break up heat shimmer without venting gas. The Taurus 692 Vent Rib is consequently much quieter to shoot than the ported three-inch versions in the same line.
MAG5 Firearms has it in stock. Handguns ship to a licensed FFL on a signed 4473, and we coordinate the transfer with your dealer.
What six and a half inches changes
- A 357 Magnum load finally gets to burn its powder charge instead of throwing most of it out as muzzle flash.
- A far longer sight radius, which is the single biggest factor in shooting any revolver accurately.
- Forward weight settles the muzzle, so the Taurus 692 Vent Rib is steady on a deliberate shot.
- Less blast reaching the shooter than any short-barrelled magnum, and no porting to add to it.
- Seven rounds in either cylinder, where most medium-frame 357s hold six.

Two cylinders, three cartridges
- Swapping cylinders takes seconds and no tools, so it is a bench job rather than something to plan around.
- The 357 cylinder also chambers 38 Special, so the Taurus 692 Vent Rib covers three cartridges in total.
- The 9mm cylinder uses moon clips, which hold the rimless cases for loading and for extraction.
- Buy spare clips with the gun. They cost little and having several loaded is what makes the 9mm cylinder worth using.
- Practise on 9mm at a fraction of magnum prices, then swap the cylinder for anything that matters.

For a version you can carry, the 3-inch 692 in black and the 3-inch in stainless are both ported. For a single-cylinder seven-shot at this length, see the Tracker 627. Browse the rest of our revolvers too.
Why this 692 earns its place
- The Taurus 692 Vent Rib is the version of the convertible that actually delivers what 357 Magnum is capable of.
- Three cartridges from one revolver, with the cheapest of them available for practice.
- A vent rib rather than porting, so you get the barrel length without the extra noise.
- Seven rounds, an adjustable-height sight picture and a long radius make it a genuinely accurate gun.
- Taurus backs it with a limited lifetime repair policy that follows the firearm rather than the original buyer.
This is a range and field revolver rather than a carry gun. The Taurus 692 Vent Rib suits handgun hunting at sensible ranges, trail carry where magnum velocity matters, and shooters who want to wring accuracy out of a wheelgun without paying custom money. The 9mm cylinder is what makes the practice affordable enough to actually get good with it.
