Description
The Taurus Judge Magnum is the version of the Judge that takes the long shells. Taurus catalogues it as 2-441039MAG: a five-shot revolver with a cylinder cut for 3-inch 410 magnum loads as well as 2-1/2 inch shells and 45 Colt, a 3-inch barrel, and matte stainless steel throughout the barrel, cylinder and frame.
That longer cylinder is the whole reason to choose this one. A 3-inch 410 shell carries a meaningful payload increase over a 2-1/2 inch load, which matters because a rifled two- or three-inch barrel is already working against you. If you intend to shoot 410 out of a Judge rather than treat it as a 45 Colt with a party trick, the Taurus Judge Magnum is the one to buy.
MAG5 Firearms has it in stock. Handguns ship to a licensed FFL on a signed 4473, and we coordinate the transfer with your dealer.
What the Taurus Judge Magnum cylinder adds
- The Taurus Judge Magnum chambers 3-inch 410 shells, 2-1/2 inch 410 shells and 45 Colt, all from the same five-round cylinder.
- A 3-inch 410 buckshot load carries more pellets than the short shell, which is the difference between a pattern and a suggestion.
- There is no adapter, insert or moon clip involved; the cylinder is simply longer.
- 45 Colt behaves exactly as it does in the shorter Judges, so nothing is given up on the cartridge side.
- Matte stainless steel handles the higher-volume shooting that a magnum cylinder tends to encourage.

Taurus Judge Magnum build, sights and handling
- Matte stainless barrel, cylinder and frame, which resists corrosion and shows wear far less than a blued finish.
- Fiber optic front sight, bright enough to pick up indoors and under a treeline.
- Finger-grooved black rubber grip, which spreads the recoil of a 45 Colt across the whole palm.
- Exposed hammer, so the Taurus Judge Magnum can be thumbed back for a light single-action press or fired double action.
- A 3-inch barrel, which is as much as you can carry comfortably and still an honest length for this cylinder.

Both chamberings are loaded to the dimensional and pressure standards published by SAAMI, so factory ammunition from any reputable maker is appropriate. Worth knowing before you buy in bulk: a rifled barrel spins a shot column and opens the pattern quickly, so 410 out of any Judge is a close-quarters proposition regardless of shell length. We stock Sellier & Bellot 410 3-inch 00 buckshot and Remington Performance WheelGun 45 Colt.
If you do not need the long chamber, the Judge Compact costs less, and the Judge TORO adds a factory optic mount. For the smallest one in the line, see the Public Defender. Browse our other revolvers as well.
Why the Judge Magnum earns its place
- The Taurus Judge Magnum is the only Judge that makes full use of the 410 side of the equation.
- Stainless construction throughout, which suits a gun that lives in a truck, a boat or a barn.
- Five rounds of 45 Colt is a serious payload from a revolver you can still carry on a belt.
- No magazine to seat and no slide to work, which is why revolvers still earn their place.
- Taurus backs it with a limited lifetime repair policy that follows the firearm rather than the first owner.
This suits an owner who bought into the Judge concept for the shotshell and wants the most of it available. The Taurus Judge Magnum is a common choice around water, livestock and woodpiles, and it works as a house gun for someone who prefers a revolver and wants the option of a shot load indoors.
A Taurus Judge Magnum takes three inch shells, not two and a half

This is the single most important line on the page and it is the reason the word Magnum is in the name. The cylinder on a Taurus Judge Magnum is cut for 3 inch .410 shells. The standard Judge and the Public Defender are cut for 2-1/2 inch only.
That works one way. A 3 inch chamber will happily fire 2-1/2 inch shells, so this gun can use the whole .410 shelf while the shorter-chambered models cannot. If you own or are considering both, the ammunition you buy for this one will not necessarily work in the other, and the box will not warn you.
A 3 inch .410 shell carries more shot than a 2-1/2, which is the practical gain. Out of a rifled 3 inch barrel the pattern still opens quickly, so the extra pellets matter at very short range rather than at distance. Sellier and Bellot 3 inch 00 buck at five pellets is the load that uses the chamber for what it is there for.
The Taurus Judge Magnum rifling problem, stated plainly
The barrel is rifled, because it has to be for .45 Colt. Rifling spins a shot column and a spinning shot column flies apart. That is physics and no amount of marketing changes it.
So a Taurus Judge Magnum is a .45 Colt revolver that can also fire a shotshell, not a shotgun that also fires .45 Colt. Inside a few yards the shot load is genuinely useful, and for snakes it is close to ideal. Past that, use the cartridge. Buying one with the opposite expectation is how people end up disappointed, and we would rather say so before you order than after.
