Description

The Taurus Judge Public Defender is the smallest gun in the Judge family and the only one built on the small frame rather than the compact frame. Taurus catalogues it as 2-441031TC: five rounds of 45 Colt or 2-1/2 inch 410 shells, a 2-inch barrel, and matte black oxide over a steel barrel, cylinder and frame.

Shrinking a Judge is harder than it sounds, because the cylinder has to stay long enough to swallow a shotshell. Taurus kept that length and trimmed everything around it, which is why the Taurus Judge Public Defender carries far more easily than the standard Judge while losing nothing in what it will chamber.

MAG5 Firearms has this one in stock. Handguns ship to a licensed FFL on a signed 4473, and we coordinate the transfer paperwork with your dealer.

What the small frame changes

  • A smaller grip frame and a 2-inch barrel, which is the difference between a revolver you carry and one you keep in a drawer.
  • The cylinder is unchanged in length, so 45 Colt and 2-1/2 inch 410 both still drop straight in.
  • A ribbed rubber grip that fills the hand without adding printable bulk.
  • Five rounds, loaded in any mix of cartridge and shotshell you prefer.
  • Steel construction throughout, which keeps the recoil of a 45 Colt manageable in a gun this small.

Sights, action and safety on the Taurus Judge Public Defender

  • Fiber optic front sight, which gathers ambient light and shows as a bright point even indoors.
  • Exposed hammer, so the Taurus Judge Public Defender fires single action for a lighter press or double action for speed.
  • Transfer bar safety blocks the firing pin mechanically until the trigger is fully pressed.
  • Matte black oxide finish on every steel surface, which cuts glare and resists corrosion.
  • Fixed rear sight with nothing to snag on a pocket or a holster mouth.

Be clear on shell length before you buy ammunition: this cylinder takes 2-1/2 inch 410 shells and 3-inch magnum shells do not belong in it. Both chamberings are produced to the dimensional and pressure standards published by SAAMI, so factory ammunition from any reputable maker is appropriate. Out of a barrel this short a 410 pattern opens fast, which is worth knowing before you count on it past a few yards. We stock Remington Performance WheelGun 45 Colt and HSM Cowboy Action 45 Colt for practice.

The standard Judge Compact has a longer barrel and a larger grip, and the Judge TORO adds a factory optic mount. Compare the rest of our revolvers before deciding.

Why the Public Defender earns its place

  • The Taurus Judge Public Defender is the only genuinely carryable revolver that chambers both 45 Colt and 410.
  • Five rounds of a large-bore cartridge from a gun that fits a coat pocket or a console.
  • No magazine, no slide, no manual of arms beyond loading and pressing the trigger.
  • Steel construction rather than alloy, which makes the 45 Colt loads tolerable.
  • Taurus backs it with a limited lifetime repair policy that follows the firearm rather than the original buyer.

This suits someone who liked the idea of a Judge but found the full-size version too much gun to carry. It is a common choice for a truck, a tackle box, a barn or a nightstand, and for owners who value one revolver that covers both a cartridge and a shot load without any conversion.

Feeding a Taurus Judge Public Defender

The chamber is cut for 2-1/2 inch 410 shells. Three-inch magnum shells will not fit, and a great deal of the 410 on a shelf is 3 inch, so read the hull length on the box rather than the front of it. Sellier and Bellot 410 in 000 buckshot is the serious short-range load in the correct length; birdshot out of a rifled 2-inch barrel patterns wide and fast and is best thought of as a snake load rather than a defensive one.

On the cartridge side, HSM Cowboy 250gr 45 Colt is the gentle option for learning the trigger without punishing your hand, and Remington Performance WheelGun 250gr is the same idea from a different maker. Both are mild by design. A Taurus Judge Public Defender will digest heavier 45 Colt happily enough, but at 29 ounces with a small grip you will feel every foot-pound of it.

One practical note that nobody mentions until you own one. The rifling that makes 45 Colt accurate is the same rifling that spins a shot column apart, so patterns open quickly. Inside a few yards that is fine and arguably useful. Past that, this is a 45 Colt revolver that can also fire a shotshell, not a shotgun, and buying it with the opposite expectation is how people end up disappointed.

Where the Taurus Judge Public Defender sits in the family

If the 2-inch barrel is shorter than you need, the Judge Compact with the 3-inch barrel gives back some velocity and sight radius on the compact frame. The Judge TORO adds an optic cut on top, which turns a close-range revolver into something you can actually aim at distance. Both are in stock.

Carrying one

Two inches of barrel and a small grip frame make the Taurus Judge Public Defender a genuinely pocketable revolver by the standards of what it chambers, but pocketable is not the same as pocket-safe. The hammer is exposed, and an exposed hammer will find a coat lining. Use a holster that covers the trigger guard and shields the hammer spur, whether that is a pocket holster or a belt rig.

Because the cylinder has to be long enough for a shotshell, the width across the cylinder is where this revolver carries its bulk rather than in its length. That changes how it prints. A Taurus Judge Public Defender rides better in a jacket pocket, a bag or a vehicle console than flat against the body, which is worth knowing before you buy a holster rather than after.

Ordering is simple. Choose it, tell us which FFL should receive it, and we handle the dealer side. If you have not picked a transfer dealer, call us and we will help you find one nearby.
