Description
The Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus in Realtree Max-7, part number J42XS16, wraps the waterfowl platform in the pattern Realtree built specifically for open marsh and flooded grass. Max-7 blends cattail, reed, and timber elements so the same gun works in a layout blind on a mudflat and in a cane hole, which is why it has largely replaced the older marsh patterns.
This is the 26 inch build with a 3.5 inch chamber, two plus one capacity, a vent rib Steelium barrel, black grip panels, a fixed Kick-Off stock, and five extended chokes in the box.
Recoil control on a 3.5 inch magnum
Three systems do the work. The Blink gas action spreads the impulse out while it cycles the bolt, the Kick-Off stock places hydraulic dampers between the action and the shoulder, and a soft comb keeps the top of the stock from slapping your cheekbone. Take away any one of them and a morning of 3.5 inch loads gets unpleasant fast.
The practical payoff is not comfort for its own sake. A shooter who is not bracing against the gun keeps their head down and follows through, and that is the difference between a clean second shot on a pair of birds and a hurried miss.
Short barrel, big controls, five chokes
Twenty-six inches is the length for a hunter working inside cover: a cane hole, a flooded timber pocket, a boat blind where a long barrel catches on everything. It comes onto a bird fast and swings cleanly inside the space you actually have.
The controls are all oversized for cold hands and gloves: an enlarged loading port, an extended charging handle, an oversized bolt release, and a rubberized panel on the fore-end. Five extended choke tubes come with the gun rather than the usual three, which covers everything from decoying mallards to a pass-shot goose without a separate purchase.

Why it is worth considering
- Max-7 covers open marsh, flooded grass, and timber in one pattern.
- Three recoil systems on a gun chambered for 3.5 inch magnums.
- A 26 inch barrel that handles inside a blind or a boat.
- Five extended choke tubes included rather than three.
- Oversized controls that stay operable with wet gloves.
Who it suits
This is a marsh and flooded-grass duck gun, and the short barrel makes it the right pick for hunters working tight cover or shooting from a boat. It handles geese over decoys and doubles as a turkey gun. It is heavy for upland walking and the camouflage is pointless on a clays course. Hunters who pass shoot at distance, or who want a longer sighting plane, should compare the 28 inch Max-7 build; those who hunt timber rather than marsh may prefer Bottomland.

Shells, chokes, and transfer notes
Shotshell dimensions and pressures are standardized by SAAMI, and the 3.5 inch chamber accepts 2 3/4, 3, and 3.5 inch shells with no adjustment. Federal law requires non-toxic shot for waterfowl, so steel, bismuth, or tungsten alloy is what this gun will see. Steel is safe through the improved cylinder and modified extended tubes supplied with it and should not go through a tighter tube not rated for steel. For off-season practice, ordinary 2 3/4 inch lead target loads cycle fine and cost a fraction of magnum non-toxic.
Hunters pass shooting at distance should compare the 28 inch Max-7 build, and timber hunters may prefer the Mossy Oak Bottomland version or the Optifade Timber build. Anyone who does not need camouflage can save money on the black synthetic gun. Every long gun we sell ships to a licensed FFL for transfer and background check, and Pennsylvania buyers should plan on the state point of contact check at pickup.
