Description

The Beretta A400 Xtreme Plus is the waterfowl gun in the A400 line, and this build, part number J42XD16, pairs a 26 inch barrel with a 3.5 inch chamber, a dark gray metal finish, and a black synthetic Kick-Off stock. Everything about it is aimed at the shooter who is going to be cold, wet, and firing heavy loads.
Capacity is two plus one, and the barrel carries a step rib with an integral mid-bead and a fiber optic front bead.

Built for 3.5 inch loads, which is the hard part

A 3.5 inch 12 gauge magnum generates recoil that most shooters would rather not think about. The A400 Xtreme Plus attacks it from three directions at once. The Blink gas system spreads the impulse out as it cycles, the Kick-Off system puts hydraulic dampers inside the buttstock, and a soft comb cushions the cheek against the vertical slap that heavy loads deliver through the stock.

That last one is easy to overlook and easy to feel. Most recoil discussion focuses on the shoulder, but on a magnum load it is the comb hitting your cheekbone that leaves you flinching by the end of a morning. Beretta addressed it directly on this stock.

Steelium Plus barrel and the step rib

The barrel is Steelium Plus, a triple-forged tri-alloy design that Beretta brought over from its competition guns. The point of it is pattern consistency across a wide range of loads, which matters more on a waterfowl gun than almost anywhere else, because steel, bismuth, and tungsten alloys all behave differently going down a barrel.

The rib is a step design with an integral mid-bead and a fiber optic front bead. The step is a competition feature: it gives the eye a clear reference for alignment without having to think about it, which pays off on a bird dropping into decoys in poor light. The metal wears a dark gray finish rather than blueing, chosen to survive salt spray and standing water.

Why it is worth considering

  • Three separate recoil systems working together, which 3.5 inch loads genuinely require.
  • A soft comb, which addresses the cheek slap that most recoil pads ignore.
  • Steelium Plus barrel for consistent patterns across steel, bismuth, and tungsten loads.
  • A step rib with an integral mid-bead, borrowed from the competition guns.
  • A corrosion-resistant finish built for standing water and salt marsh.

Who it suits

This is a duck and goose gun first. The 3.5 inch chamber, the recoil management, and the finish all point at a layout blind or a marsh, and the 26 inch barrel keeps it manageable inside a blind or a boat. It also works perfectly well on turkeys. It is not a clays gun and it is not an upland gun; the weight and the short barrel both work against a long day of walking. Waterfowlers who want a longer sighting plane for pass shooting should compare the 28 inch build.

Shells, chokes, and transfer notes

Shotshell dimensions and pressures are standardized by SAAMI, and the 3.5 inch chamber accepts 2 3/4, 3, and 3.5 inch 12 gauge shells without adjustment. Federal law requires non-toxic shot for waterfowl, so steel, bismuth, or a tungsten alloy is what goes in this gun for ducks and geese. Steel is safe through improved cylinder and modified Optima-Bore HP tubes; use a dedicated waterfowl choke for anything tighter, and never run steel through a standard full choke. For practice, ordinary 2 3/4 inch lead target loads cycle fine and cost a fraction of what magnum non-toxic does.

Hunters who want a longer sighting plane for pass shooting should compare the 28 inch build, and anyone hunting upland birds rather than waterfowl should look at the lighter A400 Xplor Action. Every long gun we sell ships to a licensed FFL for transfer and background check, and Pennsylvania buyers should plan on the state point of contact check at pickup.
