Description
The Taurus Raging Hunter 454 Casull is a five-shot hunting revolver with a 6.75-inch ported barrel, a full-length Picatinny rail moulded into the shroud, matte black oxide throughout, and the red cushioned grip insert the Raging line is known for.
.454 Casull is the cartridge that made big-bore handgun hunting practical, and it remains one of the most efficient ways to put a heavy .45-calibre bullet somewhere serious. The Taurus Raging Hunter 454 Casull also chambers .45 Colt, which is the detail that makes it livable — you can practise all afternoon on a cartridge that costs a third as much and kicks a fraction as hard.
How it is built
- The Taurus Raging Hunter 454 Casull has five chambers, which also accept .45 Colt. The Casull case is the longer of the two, so the shorter round drops straight in.
- A 6.75-inch ported barrel. The ports vent upward near the muzzle and hold the front sight down, which on a cartridge this violent is the difference between a second shot and a second try.
- A Picatinny rail running the full length of the shroud, moulded in rather than bolted on.
- A steel barrel inside an aluminium shroud, which is how the Taurus Raging Hunter 454 Casull keeps its weight sensible.
- A black rubber grip with an integrated red cushion insert down the backstrap, spreading recoil across the whole palm.
- An adjustable rear sight, a fixed front, an exposed hammer and a transfer bar safety.

Honest notes on .454
- Recoil on the Taurus Raging Hunter 454 Casull is sharp rather than heavy. .454 Casull runs at far higher pressure than .44 Magnum, and the impulse is quicker and more abrupt — many shooters find it less pleasant than a .500 despite the smaller bullet.
- Ports make it loud, and the blast goes sideways. Everyone within thirty feet needs hearing protection on every shot.
- Load .45 Colt for practice. It is cheaper, milder, and it uses the same sight picture — this is the single best thing about the chambering.
- Do not assume a .45 Colt load is safe just because the case is shorter. Heavy “Ruger only” .45 Colt ammunition is loaded well above standard pressure; read the box.
- Scrub the front of the chambers when you move back up to Casull brass after a session of .45 Colt, or the longer cases will stick.
- Use the rail. The Taurus Raging Hunter 454 Casull is capable of clean kills well past iron-sight range.

.454 Casull and .45 Colt are both standardised by SAAMI, at pressure ceilings about three times apart — which is exactly why the chamber can be cut for the Casull and still headspace the older cartridge correctly, and why the ammunition choice matters so much on this revolver.
Other Raging Hunters in stock: the .460 S&W, which adds a third cartridge to the same idea, the two-tone .44 Magnum, the .500 S&W at 8.38 inches and the seven-shot .357.
Why the Taurus Raging Hunter 454 Casull earns its place
- The Taurus Raging Hunter 454 Casull gives two cartridges out of one cylinder — .45 Colt to practise, .454 to hunt.
- Factory porting and a cushioned grip on one of the sharpest-recoiling cartridges made.
- A rail moulded into the shroud, with no separate base to shoot loose.
- 6.75 inches of barrel, which is where .454 starts to deliver its published figures.
- An all-black finish that stays quiet in a stand.
This is a handgun hunter’s revolver for deer, elk, hogs and bear, and a defensive sidearm in big-animal country. It suits someone who already shoots big-bore revolvers and wants more than a .44 without moving to a .500. It is not a first big-bore, not a range plinker and nothing to do with concealed carry — and if the recoil of a .44 Magnum is already at your limit, buy that instead.
