Description

A-Zoom 7.7x58 Jap Snap Caps, red anodized aluminum Arisaka dummy rounds, 2 pack

A-Zoom 7.7×58 Jap Snap Caps are solid aluminum dummy rounds machined to 7.7x58mm Arisaka dimensions, two to a pack. Every rifle chambered for this cartridge is at least eighty years old and none of them are being made any more, which is the whole argument for not dry firing one on an empty chamber.

How A-Zoom 7.7×58 Jap Snap Caps Are Built

Each round is CNC machined from a solid aluminum billet to full cartridge dimensions and hard anodized red. One piece, no separate case head, no plastic body. Nothing can shear off and leave a case body in the chamber of a Type 99, which is a rifle most owners are not eager to take apart on a range bench.

The primer end holds a proprietary polymer cushion in place of a live primer, rated by A-Zoom for more than three thousand strikes. It slows the firing pin roughly the way a real primer would rather than letting it stop hard against the bolt face.

The red anodizing makes A-Zoom 7.7×58 Jap Snap Caps unmistakably inert. That matters when surplus and modern-production 7.7 are both scarce enough that you do not want to lose a live round in a pile of dummies.

Why the Arisaka Needs Them

The Type 99 uses a large one-piece striker and a mainspring that has been under tension for the better part of a century. Dropping that striker on nothing is exactly the abuse that cracks a firing pin, and replacement Arisaka strikers are a specialist item rather than a catalog part.

Feeding is worth checking too. The rifle uses a five round staggered internal magazine loaded from a stripper clip, and worn feed lips or a tired follower spring will show up immediately when you cycle A-Zoom 7.7×58 Jap Snap Caps by hand. Finding that on a bench costs nothing; finding it at a match costs the match.

There is a practical ammunition angle as well. Factory 7.7×58 is expensive and intermittently available, so the fewer rounds you spend confirming that a rifle cycles, the more you have left for actually shooting it.

Field Notes

Collectors get the most out of these. Working the bolt and dropping the striker on a rifle you would rather not shoot much is how you confirm everything still functions, and doing it on A-Zoom 7.7×58 Jap Snap Caps introduces no chamber wear and no residue into a gun that gets cleaned once a decade.

Storing the rifle with the striker down on a dummy round rather than cocked keeps the mainspring relaxed. On an original wartime spring, that is worth doing.

The polymer cushion is a consumable. When the face is deeply cratered and no longer rebounds, retire that round instead of continuing to strike a dead cushion.

Working on other surplus rifles? The line also covers 7.62x54R and 303 British. Construction details are published by A-Zoom.

For Arisaka owners and collectors keeping a Type 99 functional, A-Zoom 7.7×58 Jap Snap Caps are cheap insurance on irreplaceable parts. MAG5 Firearms stocks them as manufacturer item PA12264 in the two pack.
