Description

A-Zoom 7.62x54R Snap Caps are solid aluminum dummy rounds machined to 7.62x54R dimensions, two to a pack. The rifles that use this cartridge are mostly surplus, mostly old and mostly fitted with parts that are no longer being made, which is a good argument for not dropping the striker on an empty chamber.
How A-Zoom 7.62x54R Snap Caps Are Built
Each round is CNC machined from solid aluminum billet to full cartridge dimensions and hard anodized red. One piece, no separate case head, no plastic body. Nothing can shear off and leave a case body stuck in the chamber of a rifle you would rather not disassemble on a range bench.
The primer end holds a proprietary polymer cushion instead of a live primer, rated by A-Zoom past three thousand strikes. It decelerates the firing pin roughly as a real primer would rather than letting it stop hard, which is exactly what a Mosin striker assembly does not need after a century of service.
The red anodizing makes A-Zoom 7.62x54R Snap Caps unmistakably inert, useful when live surplus ammunition with corrosive primers is also on the bench and you would rather not confuse the two.
Why Rimmed Cartridges Need Dummy Rounds
7.62x54R is rimmed, and rimmed cartridges stack badly. Load a Mosin magazine with the rims in the wrong order and the rifle jams, which is precisely what the interrupter is supposed to prevent and precisely what a worn interrupter no longer does. Cycling A-Zoom 7.62x54R Snap Caps through the magazine is how you find that out on a bench instead of at a match.
The same applies to stripper clip practice. Loading a Mosin from clips is a learned motion, and doing it with inert rounds means you can run it fifty times in an evening without a single live cartridge in the room.
There is a maintenance angle as well. Checking headspace-adjacent symptoms, confirming that a replacement bolt head actually closes on a cartridge-sized object and verifying extractor grip on a big rimmed case all want a dummy round rather than a live one.

Field Notes
Surplus rifles are where this pays off. Mosin Nagant strikers, SVT-40 firing pins and PSL parts are all finite supplies now, and A-Zoom 7.62x54R Snap Caps cost a small fraction of chasing a replacement across the internet.
Storing a bolt gun with the striker down on a dummy round keeps the mainspring relaxed instead of leaving it cocked in the safe. On a Mosin, whose striker spring is doing a lot of work already, that is a habit worth keeping.
The polymer cushion is a consumable. When the face is visibly cratered and stops rebounding, retire that round rather than continuing to strike a dead cushion.
One note for collectors: these are machined to cartridge dimensions, not to a headspace gauge specification. They are excellent for function checking and dry fire, but they are not a substitute for proper field and no-go gauges when you are evaluating a surplus rifle you have just bought.
Working on other surplus chamberings? The line also covers 303 British and 30 Carbine. Construction details are published by A-Zoom.
For Mosin Nagant, SVT and PSL owners, A-Zoom 7.62x54R Snap Caps are cheap insurance on parts that are no longer being made. MAG5 Firearms stocks them as manufacturer item PA12233 in the two pack.
