Description

A-Zoom 17 HMR Training Rounds are machined aluminum dummy rounds in 17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire, six to a pack. Rimfire rifles are the ones most reliably damaged by dry firing, because the firing pin lands on the chamber mouth rather than on a cartridge rim.
How A-Zoom 17 HMR Training Rounds Work
Each round is CNC machined from solid aluminum to 17 HMR dimensions. No priming compound, no separate case, just a one piece dummy cut to the profile of a live cartridge so it chambers, feeds from a magazine and extracts normally.
The rim is the working surface. Rather than a centre primer cushion, A-Zoom 17 HMR Training Rounds give the firing pin a soft aluminum rim to strike, absorbing the impact that would otherwise burr the chamber mouth. Rotate the round to present a fresh section of rim once the current spot is marked.
That is why rimfire training rounds are a genuinely different product from centerfire snap caps rather than the same idea scaled down. The failure being prevented is different, so the design is different.
Why 17 HMR Rifles Need Them
The 17 HMR is a bottleneck rimfire with a small, fast bullet, and the rifles chambered for it are usually accuracy-focused bolt guns or semi-autos with tight chambers. Chamber mouth damage from repeated dry fire shows up as extraction trouble and then as accuracy loss, which is exactly what you bought the rifle to avoid.
A six pack is enough to fill most rotary magazines and run a complete feed cycle by hand. Bottleneck rimfire cartridges are fussier about magazine geometry than 22 LR is, so confirming that a magazine presents rounds cleanly is worth doing with A-Zoom 17 HMR Training Rounds before it matters in the field.
There is a teaching use as well. A 17 HMR is a common first varmint rifle for a young shooter, and running the bolt, loading the magazine and working the safety with inert rounds builds the habits before live ammunition enters the picture.

Field Notes
Chamber protection is the whole argument. Recutting a rimfire chamber is a gunsmith job that costs many times what a pack of dummies does, and it is entirely avoidable.
They are also useful for a varmint rifle that lives in a truck. Confirming that the magazine still feeds and the extractor still grabs after a season of rattling around is a two minute check with inert rounds.
Aluminum is soft, so the rim will show strike marks. Rotate the round when the current spot is well marked and retire it once the whole rim has been worked over.
Shooting other rimfire chamberings? The line also covers 22 Long Rifle, and centerfire snap caps are stocked in 22 Hornet among many others. Construction details are published by A-Zoom.
For varmint shooters and anyone who dry fires a 17 HMR, A-Zoom 17 HMR Training Rounds are cheap protection for an expensive chamber. MAG5 Firearms stocks them as manufacturer item PA12202 in the six pack.
