Pietta GWII Gunfighter Competitor 357 Overview
The Gunfighter Competitor starts with the Great Western II, Pietta’s faithful take on the 1873 single action, and adds the changes serious cowboy action shooters usually pay a gunsmith for. The action is tuned from the factory with a short stroke assembly for a faster, shorter hammer throw. A longer notch slide and a low, wide hammer spur make cocking easier and more consistent, which matters when you are running two revolvers on the clock.
Sights are upgraded too, with a brass front blade and a wider rear notch on the frame for a quicker sight picture. The 6-shot cylinder fires 357 Magnum and also 38 Special, which is the usual choice for matches.
Built for Cowboy Action Shooting
SASS matches reward smooth, fast, reliable single actions. The gunfighter grip shape lets you shoot two-handed or in the traditional gunfighter style with one revolver in each hand. The short stroke and low hammer reduce the time and effort for each shot, and the 4.75 inch barrel draws quickly from a cross-draw or strong-side holster.

Shooting 38 Special in a 357
Most competitors load light 38 Special lead cowboy loads for practice and matches because they are cheaper, softer shooting and kinder to steel targets. Full-power 357 Magnum loads are fine for the field, but they recoil harder in a fixed-sight single action, and point of impact can shift between loads. Confirm where each load hits before a match.
Single Action Safety
Like an original 1873, this is a traditional single action. Load five rounds and carry the hammer down on the empty chamber, which is the standard SASS rule and the safe way to carry this design. The hammer must be cocked manually for each shot.

Finish and Care
The blued barrel and case hardened frame give the classic Old West look, but blued steel needs a light coat of oil after handling to prevent rust. If you shoot black powder cowboy loads, clean the revolver the same day with hot soapy water or a black powder solvent.
