Description
The American Tactical Alpha Maxx FDE is the full-length rifle in the Alpha Maxx line: a 16-inch 5.56 NATO AR-15 with a flat dark earth receiver set, a long M-LOK handguard and a six-position collapsible stock. It ships with flip-up sights and a 60-round magazine, so nothing else has to be bought before the first range trip.
A 16-Inch Barrel and a Long Handguard
16-inch barrel in 5.56 NATO, which also chambers .223 Remington.
Extended M-LOK handguard runs most of the barrel length, with a full-length Picatinny top rail.
That long rail is what gives the American Tactical Alpha Maxx FDE a wide support-hand window and a full sight radius for the flip-up irons.
Muzzle device fitted at the factory, and the receiver set is finished in flat dark earth against a black handguard and stock.
Stock, Sights and Magazine
Six-position collapsible stock, so length of pull adjusts for body armor, a heavy coat or a smaller shooter.
Flip-up front and rear sights included, folding flat when an optic is mounted.
Ships with a 60-round magazine for the advertised 60+1 capacity.
Standard AR-15 magazine well, so ordinary 30-round magazines drop in.
Part number ATIGAX556QD1560CFDE.

Sixteen inches is the shortest barrel a rifle can wear without entering NFA territory, which is why so much of the AR market sits exactly there. It also happens to be a good length ballistically: a 55-grain load leaves a 16-inch barrel fast enough to fragment reliably at practical distances, and the muzzle blast is far more civil than a 10.5-inch pistol produces. For a first rifle it is the least compromised choice.
Why it is worth considering
- Full 16-inch barrel with no NFA paperwork required.
- Long M-LOK handguard for lights, lasers, bipods or a hand stop.
- Flip-up sights and a 60-round magazine included.
- Six-position stock adjusts to the shooter rather than the other way round.
- Two-tone FDE and black finish rather than plain black.
Who it suits
First rifle buyers and anyone wanting a general-purpose 5.56 will be well served here, since everything needed to shoot it is in the box. Note that 60-round magazines are restricted in several states, so check your local magazine capacity rules before ordering. All firearm orders ship to a licensed FFL dealer for transfer.

Rifle or Pistol?
American Tactical builds the Alpha Maxx in several configurations. This 16-inch rifle is the simplest to own, with no brace questions and no barrel length restrictions. If a shorter package matters more, the 10.5-inch braced pistol covers that ground, though it comes with more muzzle blast and the legal considerations that apply to braced pistols. Company information is published at American Tactical.
For practice, ordinary 55-grain ball such as Fiocchi 5.56 55gr FMJ-BT is the sensible default out of a 16-inch barrel. A spare 30-round PMAG is worth having, since the 60-round magazine is awkward to shoot from prone or off a bench. All firearm orders ship to a licensed FFL dealer for transfer, and MAG5 Firearms will coordinate the paperwork with the dealer of your choice.
On optics: the continuous top rail means a red dot, a low-power variable or a magnifier can be mounted at whatever height suits, and the flip-up sights fold underneath rather than needing removal. A 1-6x or 1-8x variable makes good use of a 16-inch barrel if the rifle will see any distance work.
