Description

The Thompson 1927A-1 Wastelander is a hand-finished custom build on the Deluxe carbine, treated to look like it has survived something. The metal carries a distressed, weathered finish, the walnut furniture is worked with a cracked-earth pattern, and a length of chain serves as the sling. Underneath it is a genuine Auto-Ordnance 1927A-1 in .45 ACP.

The Finish Work

Distressed and weathered metal finish across the receiver, barrel and compensator, applied by hand rather than sprayed uniformly.

Walnut buttstock, vertical foregrip and pistol grip worked with a cracked-earth texture and finished to match the metal.

A chain sling completes the theme, fitted rather than supplied loose.

No two Thompson 1927A-1 Wastelander builds come out identical, because the distressing is applied by hand.

The Carbine Underneath

18-inch finned barrel with a pinned Cutts compensator, in the traditional Thompson profile.

Aluminum receiver, the lighter of the two Auto-Ordnance options, with a fixed buttstock.

Ships with both a 20-round stick magazine and a 50-round drum.

Semi-automatic, closed bolt, chambered in .45 ACP.

Overall length 41 inches. Model number T150DC8.

Custom Thompsons occupy an odd corner of the market. The base carbine is a faithful semi-automatic reproduction of a gun everybody recognizes, which makes it a natural canvas, and Auto-Ordnance has built a series of hand-finished variants on it over the years. What separates this one from a painted rifle is that the work is applied to the metal and wood rather than wrapped over them, and the pinned compensator and barrel remain functional throughout.

Why it is worth considering

  • Hand-applied distressed finish on both metal and walnut.
  • Both a 20-round stick and a 50-round drum magazine included.
  • Aluminum receiver keeps the weight manageable for an 18-inch Thompson.
  • Pinned Cutts compensator in the traditional pattern.
  • Built in the United States by the company that made the originals.

Who it suits

This is a collector’s piece first, but it is a functioning semi-automatic carbine and can be shot like any other 1927A-1. Buyers should understand that the finish is the point: a distressed treatment is meant to look worn, and ordinary handling marks will blend into it rather than stand out. At this level the gun is usually bought to be displayed and occasionally fired rather than carried to the range every weekend.

Where It Sits in the Thompson Range

Auto-Ordnance builds the 1927A-1 in a long list of standard configurations as well as a series of hand-finished customs. If a working carbine matters more than the finish work, the Lightweight Deluxe T5 is the same action with plain walnut and a 16.5-inch barrel at a fraction of the price. Browse the full Auto-Ordnance range or the wider firearms catalog. Auto-Ordnance publishes the variant list at Auto-Ordnance.

If it is going to be fired, standard 230-grain brass-cased ball is what the platform was designed around and what the blowback action cycles most reliably. Lighter target loads can be marginal. The 50-round drum is heavy when loaded, so most owners shoot the stick magazine and keep the drum for display. All firearm orders ship to a licensed FFL dealer for transfer, and MAG5 Firearms will coordinate the paperwork with the dealer of your choice.

For storage, a hard case with a desiccant is better than closed foam. The distressed finish is durable, but the chain sling and the exposed metal at the compensator are the surfaces most likely to pick up surface rust if the gun is stored against damp foam for long periods.
