Description

Glenfield was Marlin’s value line for thirty years, and the name came back on this rifle. The Glenfield Model A 30-06 is what Ruger builds when the brief is a hunting rifle that does the job and nothing else: a 20 inch threaded barrel, a three lug bolt, an adjustable trigger and a Picatinny rail already on the receiver.

What it does not have is wood, a hinged floorplate or a polished finish. The Glenfield Model A 30-06 spends its money on the action and the barrel, and it is honest about that everywhere else.

What the Glenfield Model A 30-06 actually is

  • A bolt action centerfire hunting rifle in 30-06 Springfield with a 20 inch matte black barrel, threaded 5/8×24 with a thread protector fitted.
  • A three lug bolt with a seventy degree throw, so the handle clears a low mounted scope without a fight.
  • A four round detachable polymer magazine with an integral catch, one supplied with the rifle.
  • A bladed safety trigger the owner can adjust between roughly three and five pounds.
  • A matte black alloy steel receiver with a Picatinny rail already mounted for optics.
  • A moss green splatter synthetic stock with a rubber buttpad and textured panels at the grip and forend. Manufacturer number 52002.

Why the threaded muzzle on the Glenfield Model A 30-06 is the useful part

  • A 5/8×24 thread is the common standard for 30 caliber muzzle devices, so the Glenfield Model A 30-06 will take a brake or a thread protector without adapters.
  • 30-06 out of a short 20 inch barrel is loud and it kicks. A brake meaningfully changes both, and this rifle is set up for one out of the box.
  • The thread protector is included, so nothing is exposed if you never fit anything.
  • A threaded muzzle on a budget rifle usually costs a gunsmith visit. Here it is factory cut and concentric to the bore.
  • We do not sell NFA items such as suppressors. If that is where you are headed, that route runs through a dealer who handles those transfers and requires ATF approval before you take possession.

Feeding the Glenfield Model A 30-06

A 1:10 twist in 30-06 stabilizes the whole hunting range comfortably, from 150 grain deer loads up through 180 and 200 grain bullets for elk and bear. That is wider latitude than most chamberings give you, and it is a large part of why this cartridge has outlasted every attempt to replace it.

Glenfield Model A 30-06 bolt action rifle shown at an angle with the Picatinny rail and threaded muzzle

  • For deer, Hornady Whitetail 30-06 165 grain SST is the straightforward choice and it is priced to shoot more than one box.
  • For elk or larger, Barnes Harvest 30-06 Tipped 180 grain gives deeper penetration from a heavier bullet at the cost of a little velocity.
  • Spare magazines matter on a rifle that ships with one. The Glenfield Model A long action four round magazine is the correct one for the 30-06; do not buy the 350 Legend or short action versions.
  • A 20 inch barrel gives up roughly a hundred feet per second against a 24 inch one in this cartridge. That is not enough to change what the Glenfield Model A 30-06 will do to an animal at hunting distance.
  • Shoot at least two loads before the season. A specific rifle usually prefers one, and finding it costs two boxes and an afternoon.

Setting up the Glenfield Model A 30-06

Glenfield lists the Model A line on its own site if you want the manufacturer view alongside ours: the Glenfield rifles page covers the family and the calibers it is offered in. Both 30-06 and the cartridges it competes with are loaded to the dimensional and pressure standards published by SAAMI, so any factory ammunition from a reputable maker is appropriate in this rifle.

The rail is Picatinny and it is already on the receiver, so any set of Picatinny rings will mount a scope. Buy rings only as tall as the objective bell requires; every millimeter of unnecessary height makes the rifle harder to shoot well from field positions.

Adjust the trigger before you zero, not after. It comes usable from the factory but the adjustment range runs down to about three pounds, and a lighter break will flatter your groups more than any other change you can make to the Glenfield Model A 30-06 for free. Check the action screws after the first fifty rounds, because that is when a synthetic stocked rifle settles.

Why the Glenfield Model A 30-06 earns its place

  • A rail and a threaded muzzle are the two things budget rifles usually make you pay for later. Both are already here.
  • At about 6.3 pounds bare, the Glenfield Model A 30-06 carries well without being so light that 30-06 becomes unpleasant.
  • An adjustable trigger at this price is unusual, and a three pound break makes far more difference to group size than any stock upgrade.
  • 30-06 is the most widely stocked big game cartridge in North America and it will take anything on this continent.
  • The synthetic stock and matte finish do not care about rain, which is the whole argument against wood on a working rifle.

This is a working deer and elk rifle. The Glenfield Model A 30-06 suits the hunter who wants a dependable bolt gun and would rather spend the difference on glass, the buyer setting up a rifle for a brake, and anyone who needs something that can live in a truck without being babied.

It is not a showpiece and it is not a long range target rifle. If you want walnut and a polished receiver, buy something else. If you want a threaded 30-06 with a good trigger and a rail for the price of a scope, this is the rifle. Every firearm on this page ships to your chosen FFL for transfer and pickup.

One more thing worth knowing before the first hunt: the magazine is polymer with an integral catch rather than a hinged floorplate, so it drops free in your hand and it is quiet to reload. Practice seating it with gloves on, because that is the condition you will actually be doing it in, and a magazine that is not fully latched is the most common reason a bolt gun fails to feed the second round.
