Description
The Glenfield Model A 223 Rem is a bolt-action rifle with a list of features that do not usually appear together at this price: a user-adjustable trigger, a 1:8 twist barrel, a threaded muzzle, a three-lug bolt with a 70 degree throw and a Picatinny rail already on the receiver.
It is 20 inches of barrel, five rounds in a detachable magazine, and a moss green splatter-finished synthetic stock. Six and a half pounds.
What makes the Glenfield Model A 223 Rem worth a look
- An adjustable trigger. The distributor record states a user-adjustable pull between 3 and 5 pounds. On a rifle in this bracket a trigger you can set yourself is unusual and it is the single biggest thing standing between most shooters and a tighter group.
- 1:8 twist. Faster than the 1:9 most budget 223 rifles use, which means it will stabilize the heavier bullets a 1:9 barrel often will not.
- A threaded muzzle, 1/2″-28. Standard 223 thread pitch, so any common muzzle device fits.
- A three-lug bolt with a 70 degree throw, which keeps the handle clear of a mounted scope.
- A Picatinny rail on the receiver, swivel studs, a soft rubber buttpad and a checkered splatter stock that grips without being abrasive.

There are no sights on a Glenfield Model A 223 Rem
- The distributor record lists sights as none. The receiver carries a Picatinny rail, so a scope mounts without buying bases, but the glass is a separate purchase.
- Budget for it when you budget for the rifle. A 223 bolt gun with no optic is not much use.
- The 70 degree bolt throw exists precisely so that a scope can sit low without the handle fouling it.

Why the Glenfield Model A 223 Rem earns its place
- An adjustable trigger and a fast twist, at a price where you normally get neither.
- Threaded from the factory, so a brake or a flash hider is a bolt-on rather than a gunsmithing job.
- A detachable box magazine rather than a hinged floorplate, so you can unload without cycling rounds through the chamber.
- Six and a half pounds is light enough to carry all day and heavy enough not to be twitchy off a bipod.
- It is the same action in seven other chamberings, so if you get on with it there is a direct path to a matching rifle in something larger.
Honest notes. There is no optic and no iron sight, so the real cost of a Glenfield Model A 223 Rem is the rifle plus glass plus rings. Work that out before you compare it against a package rifle that comes with a scope, because a bundled scope is usually the cheapest part of a package.
Make the Glenfield Model A 223 Rem twist work for you. At 1:8 this barrel will stabilize heavy-for-caliber bullets, which is the whole reason to prefer it over a 1:9. Hornady Critical Defense 223 73gr is the heavier load we hold in depth; the 55gr is the lighter one and will shoot perfectly well too. Buy both and find out which your rifle prefers — every barrel has an opinion.
On the threaded muzzle: 1/2″-28 takes a muzzle device. A suppressor is a National Firearms Act item requiring ATF approval, and MAG5 does not sell them.
One practical point about Glenfield Model A 223 Rem magazines. We stock Glenfield Model A magazines in 350 Legend and in long-action, but not a spare short-action magazine for the 223 at the moment. Tell us if you want one with the rifle and we will order it in rather than let you discover the gap later.
The same rifle is available in seven other chamberings and we hold most of them: 308 Winchester, 243 Winchester, 270 Winchester, 30-06, 6.5 Creedmoor, 350 Legend and 450 Bushmaster.
