Description

The Ruger LCP MAX 250th Anniversary is the pocket pistol Ruger built to mark 250 years of American liberty, and for once the commemorative treatment is more than a sticker. The frame is molded in Liberty Blue with red and white splatter through it, and the slide carries the anniversary line engraved rather than printed.

Underneath the paintwork it is the standard LCP MAX, which is the point. Ten rounds of 380 ACP in a pistol weighing ten and a half ounces, with a tritium front sight fitted from the factory and a 2.8-inch barrel. The Ruger LCP MAX 250th Anniversary carries exactly like the plain one because mechanically it is the plain one.

What the 250th Anniversary treatment adds

  • The Ruger LCP MAX 250th Anniversary carries a Liberty Blue polymer frame with red and white splatter molded through the material, not sprayed on top of it.
  • The slide is engraved with the line about being made in the 250th year of American liberty; it is cut into the steel.
  • Black nitride finish on the slide and barrel, with serrations front and rear.
  • Everything else is standard LCP MAX, so holsters, magazines and parts all interchange.
  • The color survives a scuff, because a gouge in molded polymer shows the same color underneath.

How it carries and shoots

  • The Ruger LCP MAX 250th Anniversary weighs ten and a half ounces unloaded, which is the reason people buy an LCP MAX rather than a bigger 380.
  • Ten rounds in a flush-fitting magazine, which was the headline feature when the MAX replaced the original LCP II.
  • A tritium front sight and a plain rear, so the eye goes where it should in poor light.
  • Only one magazine ships in the box, so buy a second before you start carrying it.
  • A 2.8-inch barrel means 380 leaves this pistol slower than the box implies; choose a carry load designed for short barrels.

380 ACP is a standardized cartridge, with pressure and dimensional limits published by SAAMI. A 2.8-inch barrel is short enough that expansion becomes genuinely load-dependent, so the choice of ammunition matters more here than on a service pistol. Shoot a full box of whatever you intend to carry through the Ruger LCP MAX 250th Anniversary before you trust it.

For practice with the Ruger LCP MAX 250th Anniversary, CCI Blazer Brass 95 gr FMJ keeps the cost sensible. For carry, Grizzly 90 gr JHP is the defensive load to confirm in the gun.

If the commemorative frame is not for you, the plain LCP MAX in 380 ACP and the front-sight version are the same pistol without it, and the window-cut slide variant lightens things further. Ruger also marked the anniversary on a rifle: the 10/22 250th Anniversary carries the same engraving on an engraved receiver and hardwood stock.

Compliance: this model is not sold into California. Everything else routes to your FFL as normal.

Why the Ruger LCP MAX 250th Anniversary earns its place

  • Ten rounds of 380 in a ten-and-a-half-ounce pistol, which is still a remarkable combination.
  • A tritium front sight fitted as standard rather than as an upgrade.
  • A commemorative finish molded through the frame rather than sprayed onto it.
  • Full parts, holster and magazine compatibility with every other LCP MAX.
  • A gun that will still look like something in twenty years, unlike most anniversary editions.

Be clear-eyed about two things. First, the anniversary treatment is cosmetic: the Ruger LCP MAX 250th Anniversary will not shoot any better than the black one beside it, and if the color does not appeal, buy the plain version and save the difference.

Second, a 10.6-ounce 380 kicks more than its size suggests and the sight radius is short. This is a pistol for close distances and for the days when a proper carry gun will not fit under your clothes. Used that way it is excellent; used as a range gun it will tire your hand out in fifty rounds.
