Description

The Leupold VX-4HD 3-12×40 FireDot Twilight Hunter is the scope you reach for when legal light is closing and the animal is still moving. It is item 185453, built on a 30mm main tube, and every figure on this page is read straight off Leupold’s own specification table rather than copied from a distributor sheet.

What the Leupold VX-4HD 3-12×40 FireDot gives you

The Leupold VX-4HD 3-12×40 FireDot is a second focal plane riflescope, so the reticle holds the same apparent size at 3x and at 12x. The subtensions are only true at one magnification, which is the trade most hunters happily make for a reticle that never disappears when you dial the power down for a close shot.

The FireDot Twilight Hunter reticle is the reason to buy the Leupold VX-4HD 3-12×40 FireDot over a plain Duplex model. Eight illumination settings run off a single CR2032, with Leupold’s Motion Sensor Technology shutting the dot off after five minutes of stillness and waking it the instant the rifle moves. Leupold rates the illumination as both daylight bright and night vision compatible.

Battery life on the Leupold VX-4HD 3-12×40 FireDot is published as 1600 hours on low, 1000 on medium and 300 on high. A push button controls brightness, so there is no rheostat ring crowding the ocular.

Leupold VX-4HD 3-12×40 FireDot turrets and adjustment range

The CDS-ZL2 elevation dial locks, and carries a revolution indicator and a set-screw rezero. Windage is a pop-up rezero turret. Clicks are 1/4 MOA on both axes. Total elevation travel is 90 MOA (26.2 MIL, 262 cm at 100 m) with 20 MOA per revolution and a 38 MOA dial travel limit; windage gives 65 MOA (18.9 MIL) at 20 MOA per turn.

No BDC dial ships in the box with the Leupold VX-4HD 3-12×40 FireDot, but the turret is cut for a custom CDS dial matched to your load. That is worth knowing before you compare this to a scope that includes one.

Parallax is fixed and set parallax-free at 150 yards. There is no side focus and no adjustable objective on the Leupold VX-4HD 3-12×40 FireDot, which keeps the left side of the turret housing clean and keeps the weight down, but it also means you accept a little parallax error at very short range.

Glass, eye box and dimensions

Eye relief on the Leupold VX-4HD 3-12×40 FireDot is 4.0 inches at the bottom of the range and 3.9 inches at the top, so the eye box barely shifts as you wind the power up. Linear field of view is 33.5 feet at 100 yards on 3x, narrowing to 8.4 feet on 12x, which works out to 6.4 and 1.6 degrees.

Leupold VX-4HD 3-12x40 FireDot Twilight Hunter reticle diagram

The scope weighs 15.6 ounces and measures 12.7 inches overall with 5.6 inches of usable mounting space. That mounting figure matters more than the total length when you are fitting rings to a short receiver, so measure your bases before ordering.

Honest notes on the Leupold VX-4HD 3-12×40 FireDot

Two things are worth saying plainly. First, the 30mm main tube is not a magic upgrade over a 1-inch tube for light transmission; it buys you internal adjustment range, and 90 MOA of elevation is genuinely useful if you shoot past what the fixed 150 yard parallax setting is comfortable with.

Second, an illuminated reticle is a battery-dependent feature. The etched reticle remains perfectly usable with a dead cell, but the FireDot centre goes black. Carry a spare CR2032 in your pack and change it at the start of every season rather than discovering the problem at last light.

Leupold sells no BDC dial with this one and publishes no lens-coating breakdown or finish colour anywhere on the product page. You will see retailers list “matte black” and a coating trade name as if they were manufacturer specifications. We are not going to print figures Leupold does not publish.

Who this scope suits

Whitetail and elk hunters working timber edges, anyone who takes shots in the last twenty minutes of legal light, and shooters who want a dialable elevation turret without stepping up to a tactical scope. The Leupold VX-4HD 3-12×40 FireDot covers a normal hunting envelope without asking you to learn a new reticle language.

It is a poor match if you need parallax adjustment for rimfire or airgun distances, or if you want first focal plane subtensions for ranging. Look at a side focus model instead.
