Description

CorBon 308 Win 185gr Subsonic FMJ is CorBon item PM308S185 from its Performance Match line. It loads a 185 grain full metal jacket boat tail bullet to about 1,000 fps, keeping it below the speed of sound so it can be shot quietly through a suppressor. It comes in a 20 round box.
Who Makes CorBon 308 Win 185gr Subsonic FMJ
CorBon has built high performance defensive, hunting and match ammunition for decades. Its Performance Match line focuses on consistent, accurate loads for training and competition, and it includes subsonic options for shooters who run suppressors.
Most full power 308 is loaded to around 2,600 to 2,800 fps. Quiet loads are a very different animal. By keeping the bullet below about 1,100 fps, the load eliminates the sonic crack that makes supersonic rifle fire loud even when suppressed.
A 185 grain bullet is relatively light for a subsonic 308 load, which helps the cartridge function in some rifles, but it carries less energy than the heavy 200 grain and up bullets used in some quiet hunting loads.
Because the case is loaded with a much smaller powder charge than full power ammunition, recoil from CorBon 308 Win 185gr Subsonic FMJ is very light. That makes it a comfortable way to introduce new shooters to a full size 308 rifle, or to put a lot of rounds through a suppressed rifle in a single session.
Specifications and Performance
Retail listings give CorBon 308 Win 185gr Subsonic FMJ a velocity of about 1,000 fps. With a full metal jacket boat tail bullet, this is a training and target load rather than a hunting load, since FMJ bullets do not expand reliably at any velocity, and even less so at subsonic speeds.
Expect a steep trajectory. Many shooters zero these loads at 50 or 100 yards and keep shots within about 150 to 200 yards. Record your holds carefully, as they will be very different from your supersonic load.
Subsonic loads are sensitive to temperature and barrel length. A very long barrel on a hot day can push a load close to the speed of sound, which brings back some of the noise. Chronograph CorBon 308 Win 185gr Subsonic FMJ in your rifle if quiet shooting is the priority.

Field Notes
Reduced loads will usually not cycle a standard semi-automatic 308 rifle reliably. Bolt actions are the natural host. If you shoot a gas gun, you may need an adjustable gas block and a suppressor, and even then results vary by rifle.
With a bolt action, subsonic loads are an enjoyable way to train with a suppressed rifle at reduced noise and recoil, and to practise wind and holdover skills with a steep trajectory at short range.
Clean your bore and suppressor regularly. Subsonic loads with reduced powder charges can leave more unburned powder and carbon behind than full power ammunition, especially in suppressed rifles.
Suppressors are regulated under the National Firearms Act and require ATF approval, a tax stamp and compliance with state law. Check your local laws before buying or using one.
Store ammunition cool and dry. Rifle ammunition requires buyers to be at least 18, and some states add extra rules for ammunition purchases.
