Who Makes Buffalo Bore 308 Win 175gr Match BTHP

Buffalo Bore Ammunition, based in Montana, has made this 308 load for well over a decade, and it has a reputation for accuracy. The company says it tunes each production lot by searching for the most accurate combination of powder, bullet and brass from the components available.

Because of that, velocity varies a little from lot to lot. In a Springfield M1A National Match rifle with a 22 inch barrel, Buffalo Bore reports velocities between 2,640 and 2,700 fps across production batches. That is typical for a 175 grain match load in the 308.

The 175 grain Sierra match bullet is one of the most widely used long range bullets in the 308. It was developed to stay supersonic further out than the older 168 grain match bullet, which helps at 800 to 1,000 yards. It is a large part of why Buffalo Bore 308 Win 175gr Match BTHP has such a strong following.

Specifications and Performance

Buffalo Bore does not publish a single velocity for Buffalo Bore 308 Win 175gr Match BTHP. Expect around 2,650 fps from a 22 inch barrel, a little more from a 24 or 26 inch barrel and less from a short carbine. Always chronograph your own rifle and true your ballistic data at distance.

Sierra lists the 175 grain bullet with a G1 ballistic coefficient of around 0.5, which helps it buck wind and hold velocity. Combined with a carefully assembled load, that makes this ammunition a good choice for precise distance work from a precise bolt rifle or a match grade semi-auto.

Remember that factory match ammunition is only as accurate as the rifle firing it. A free-floated barrel, a solid scope mount and a consistent trigger will do more for your groups than any single box of ammunition. If your rifle likes Buffalo Bore 308 Win 175gr Match BTHP, it will reward you with very consistent results.

Field Notes

Sierra does not recommend this match bullet for hunting. Buffalo Bore notes that at 308 impact velocities it does mushroom on deer-sized animals between about 100 and 500 yards, and the company has used it on deer and hogs. If you hunt with it, choose your shots carefully and avoid large animals at close range.

Buy enough of a single lot to cover your season. Because Buffalo Bore adjusts each lot for accuracy, two lots can print slightly differently. Confirm your zero and record your velocity whenever you open a new lot.

For semi-automatic rifles, check that the bullet seating depth and case length cycle reliably through your magazines. Match loads are usually assembled to standard magazine length, but every rifle is different, so test a few rounds before a match or hunt.

308 cartridges can generally be used in rifles marked 7.62 NATO, and most modern 308 rifles handle both. Check your owner manual if you shoot an older military surplus rifle.

Store ammunition cool and dry. Rifle ammunition requires buyers to be at least 18, and some states add extra rules for ammunition purchases.
