Description

The Buffalo Bore 357 Sig 125gr JHP is the cartridge loaded to do what it was invented to do. A 125 grain jacketed hollow point at 1425 fps produces roughly 564 ft-lbs, ahead of typical factory 357 Sig, with a flash suppressed powder behind it. Twenty rounds per box, item 25A/20.

Buffalo Bore 357 Sig 125gr JHP Overview

The 357 Sig is a 40 S&W case necked down to take a 0.355 inch bullet, and it was created in 1994 with one explicit goal: to give a service autoloader the performance of a 125 grain 357 Magnum. Whether it quite reaches that is debatable, but it gets closer than anything else in a duty pistol.

The bottleneck shape has a practical benefit that gets overlooked. A tapered case feeds into the chamber very positively, which is why agencies that adopted the cartridge tended to praise its reliability rather than its ballistics.

Buffalo Bore loads the Buffalo Bore 357 Sig 125gr JHP with a conventional lead core jacketed hollow point and a flash suppressed powder. At 1425 fps the bullet has abundant velocity to expand, and the powder choice means firing it in poor light will not take your night vision with it.

357 Sig Defense Ammo Ballistics

564 ft-lbs is a strong figure for a service pistol cartridge. Typical factory 357 Sig runs a 125 grain bullet around 1350 fps for about 506 ft-lbs, so this is roughly eleven percent ahead of the usual offering.

Set against the competition it looks better still. A standard 124 grain 9mm makes about 360 ft-lbs, Buffalo Bore’s own 9mm +P+ 115 grain reaches 500, and a standard 180 grain 40 S&W lands near 400. High velocity pistol ammunition in this calibre is genuinely at the top of the service pistol class.

The honest comparison is against the cartridge it was built to imitate. Buffalo Bore’s full power 125 grain 357 Magnum makes 802 ft-lbs from a revolver, so the 357 Sig is not quite the equal of a magnum revolver. It is, however, considerably closer than any other autoloading cartridge gets.

Why The 125 Grain JHP Bottleneck Bullet Works So Well

Speed is what a hollow point needs most, and this cartridge has it in abundance. At 1425 fps there is no question about whether the bullet will open, which removes the single most common failure mode in defensive handgun ammunition.

The bottleneck case is the mechanical reason the velocity is available. A 40 S&W case holds more powder than a 9mm one, and necking it down to a 0.355 bullet puts all of that capacity behind a lighter projectile. That is the whole trick.

Feeding is the underrated benefit. A 125 grain JHP bottleneck bullet is guided into the chamber by the case shoulder rather than relying on the bullet nose to find the ramp, which is why hollow point reliability in this calibre tends to be excellent even in pistols that are fussy with 45 or 9mm hollow points.

Flash suppression matters because this is a loud, bright cartridge by nature. All that powder burning fast produces a substantial fireball with conventional propellant, so a low flash 357 Sig load is worth seeking out rather than treating as a bonus.

Range Notes For This Low Flash 357 Sig Load

Confirm function with a box. This 357 Sig defense ammo is loaded hotter than standard factory ammunition, and while the bottleneck case feeds beautifully, the recoil impulse differs enough to be worth verifying in your own pistol.

Expect faster wear if you shoot volume. The 357 Sig is already hard on recoil springs relative to a 9mm, and a heavy loading more so. Carrying this and practising with standard ammunition is the sensible pattern.

Check your point of impact. Faster ammunition exits the barrel sooner and often prints differently in a fixed sight pistol, so put it on paper at your realistic distance rather than assuming it matches your practice load.

Remember many 357 Sig pistols will also run 40 S&W with a barrel swap. That is worth knowing if you want cheaper practice, since the two cartridges share a case head and a magazine.
