Description
The Buffalo Bore Heavy 10mm 180gr JHP is the 10mm Auto loaded the way it was meant to be. A 180 grain jacketed hollow point at 1350 fps produces roughly 728 ft-lbs, which is what the cartridge was designed to do before three decades of factory ammunition quietly downloaded it to 40 S&W performance. Twenty rounds per box, item 21B/20.

Buffalo Bore Heavy 10mm 180gr JHP Overview
180 grains is the classic 10mm bullet weight and the one the cartridge’s reputation was built on. It is heavy enough to penetrate properly and light enough to be driven fast, which is the balance that made the 10mm interesting in the first place.
The bullet is a conventional lead core jacketed hollow point. At 1350 fps it has more than enough speed to expand reliably, and the 0.400 inch frontal area means it is making a wide hole before it opens at all.
The pressure story is worth telling. A great deal of factory 10mm on the shelf is loaded to velocities a 40 S&W will match, which defeats the purpose of owning the bigger cartridge. The Buffalo Bore Heavy 10mm 180gr JHP does not do that, and the difference on a chronograph is not subtle.
10mm Auto Full Power Ammo Ballistics
728 ft-lbs from a service pistol is remarkable. For comparison, a standard 180 grain 40 S&W load makes about 400, a 45 ACP 230 grain load around 370, and a full power 357 Magnum from a four inch revolver lands near 550 to 600.
Within Buffalo Bore’s own 10mm range this is the full power end. Their 155 grain lead free tactical load makes 627 ft-lbs at the same 1350 fps and is explicitly built for social use with lower recoil. This 10mm Auto full power ammo is the one for hunting and for the woods.
Expect a shorter barrel to cost you speed. Buffalo Bore’s published figures for their other 10mm loads showed a 3.8 inch Glock 29 running about 85 fps behind a 4.6 inch Glock 20, so a compact will trail a full size gun but still produce serious numbers.
Why The 180 Grain JHP 10mm Bullet Is The Benchmark
The 10mm has always had two jobs and one reputation. It was designed as a service cartridge, spent twenty years as a hunting and bear defence round after the FBI walked away from it, and is now carried for both. A 180 grain bullet at full power is the weight that serves both ends reasonably well.
Against the lighter 155 grain loads, a 180 grain JHP 10mm bullet gives up nothing in speed and gains twenty five grains. That extra mass is what carries the expanded bullet deeper, which is the difference between a load for people and a load that will also work on a hog.
Against the heavier 200 and 220 grain hard cast loads, it gives up penetration and gains expansion. A 180 grain JHP 10mm bullet opens reliably and transfers energy quickly, where a hard cast flat nose simply bores through.
So this sits in the middle by design, and the middle is where most people actually want to be. If you own one 10mm and want one box of ammunition in the safe that will handle most of what you ask of the gun, a heavy 10mm hunting and defense load at 180 grains is the sensible pick.

Range Notes For This Heavy 10mm Hunting And Defense Load
Confirm function with a box. Full power 10mm produces a considerably heavier recoil impulse than the downloaded factory ammunition most pistols are shipped tuned for, and some guns benefit from a heavier recoil spring on a steady diet of it.
Watch the chamber on older pistols. A 10mm with a heavily unsupported chamber is worth thinking about at these pressures. That is a general caution about the cartridge rather than something specific to this load, and a modern aftermarket barrel resolves it cleanly.
Check your point of impact. High energy 10mm ammunition at this velocity shoots noticeably flatter than the mild factory loads, so a fixed sight pistol may print differently than you are used to.
Practise with cheaper ammunition and confirm with this. Full power 10mm is expensive and tiring to shoot in volume, and the recoil difference is large enough that a few magazines of the real thing genuinely matters before you rely on it.
