Who Makes Buffalo Bore 454 Casull 300gr JFN
Buffalo Bore Ammunition, based in Montana, builds heavy loads for hunters and outdoorsmen in elk and bear country. It publishes the velocities its ammunition produces in real revolvers rather than in laboratory test barrels.
Interestingly, the 454 Casull is one cartridge Buffalo Bore deliberately does not load to its full pressure limit. The company explains that at maximum pressure heavy bullets tend to jump their crimp and tie up the cylinder, and fired cases can stick in the chambers. Neither is acceptable in an emergency.
So Buffalo Bore 454 Casull 300gr JFN runs at a level Buffalo Bore describes as very powerful, comfortable to shoot and reliable. In its view, a 300 grain bullet at this speed gives up nothing in killing performance compared with a hotter load, while making the revolver far more dependable.
The 454 Casull was developed by Dick Casull and Jack Fulmer in the 1950s and became a factory cartridge in the 1980s with the Freedom Arms revolver. It remains one of the most powerful revolver cartridges in common use, and quality factory ammunition for it is not always easy to find.
Specifications and Performance
Buffalo Bore lists Buffalo Bore 454 Casull 300gr JFN at 1,650 fps and 1,813 ft-lbs. That is a big step up from heavy 45 Colt and 44 Magnum loads, and it puts the 454 Casull firmly in the big bore revolver hunting category. Buffalo Bore also publishes exterior ballistic charts for this item at several velocities.
The jacketed flat nose design gives a wide, flat meplat that helps the bullet track straight and penetrate deeply while still expanding. For hunters using a 454 Casull revolver on elk, moose, bear or bison, that combination is exactly what is needed.

Field Notes
454 Casull ammo must only be fired in firearms chambered for 454 Casull. Many 454 revolvers can also fire 45 Colt, which is useful for practice, but 454 Casull cartridges must never be fired in a revolver chambered only for 45 Colt.
Recoil is severe. Practise with 45 Colt in your 454 revolver to build good habits, then shoot enough of Buffalo Bore 454 Casull 300gr JFN to confirm your point of impact and comfort before a hunt. A good grip and hearing protection are essential.
For handgun hunting, keep shots close, generally inside about 75 yards, and use a rest whenever you can. Check your state regulations, as some states set minimum energy or cartridge rules for big game with handguns.
After a range session, check the cylinder for any sign of sticky extraction. If cases are hard to remove, clean the chambers thoroughly; carbon and lead rings from 45 Colt practice ammunition can make 454 cases stick.
Buyers must be at least 21 for handgun ammunition from a licensed dealer under federal law, and some states add extra rules. Store ammunition cool and dry.
