Description

Buffalo Bore 44 Mag 300gr JFN Heavy is Buffalo Bore item 4B, a heavy 300 grain jacketed flat nose load for the 44 Magnum. It is built for big game up to about 1,000 pounds and for bear defense, and it comes in a 20 round box.
Who Makes Buffalo Bore 44 Mag 300gr JFN Heavy
Buffalo Bore Ammunition, based in Montana, specialises in heavy handgun and rifle loads for hunters and outdoorsmen in big game and bear country. It tests its ammunition in ordinary production revolvers and rifles and publishes those results.
Buffalo Bore says this bullet is designed for super deep penetration at revolver speeds. At handgun velocities it expects about 3 feet of penetration in muscle and bone. Fired from a rifle, the higher velocity makes the bullet mushroom more, creating a wider wound channel with roughly 2 feet of penetration.
That dual behaviour makes Buffalo Bore 44 Mag 300gr JFN Heavy useful for hunters who carry a 44 Magnum revolver and a 44 Magnum lever action carbine. The same ammunition works in both, with the trade-offs between penetration and expansion shifting with velocity.
Specifications and Performance
Buffalo Bore lists Buffalo Bore 44 Mag 300gr JFN Heavy at 1,300 fps and 1,126 ft-lbs from a revolver. Its own results show 1,330 fps from a Ruger Super Blackhawk with a 6 inch barrel, 1,334 fps from a Ruger Redhawk with a 5.5 inch barrel and 1,770 fps from an 1894 Marlin carbine with an 18.5 inch barrel.
The company also publishes exterior ballistic charts for several muzzle velocities. For handgun hunting, most shots are inside 50 to 75 yards, while a carbine extends practical range to around 150 yards with a suitable zero.
Buffalo Bore offers lighter 44 Magnum loads for deer-sized game and hard cast options for maximum penetration. The 300 grain jacketed flat nose sits between those choices, combining a heavy, long bullet with a jacket that holds up at both revolver and carbine speeds.

Field Notes
Buffalo Bore specifically states that item 4B is recommended for all steel revolvers and rifles on the market, but it is not suitable for scandium or aluminium alloy revolvers. Lightweight alloy-frame guns can suffer from crimp jump and excessive stress with heavy loads like this.
Recoil is heavy from a 300 grain 44 Magnum load in a revolver. Practise with lighter ammunition, then shoot enough of Buffalo Bore 44 Mag 300gr JFN Heavy to confirm point of impact and that you can make fast, accurate follow-up shots. For bear defense, practise drawing and firing from the carry position you will actually use.
A flat nose bullet is well suited to tube magazine lever action rifles, as the blunt tip will not rest a point against the primer of the cartridge ahead. Always check that the cartridge overall length cycles in your rifle before relying on it.
If you plan to carry this load as bear defense in a holster, check that the bullets do not move forward in the cases after a cylinder of firing. Fire five rounds, then measure the sixth. Any growth in length is a warning sign for that gun and load combination.
Buyers must be at least 21 for handgun ammunition from a licensed dealer under federal law, and some states add extra rules. Store ammunition cool and dry.
