Description
The HEVI-Shot Bismuth Upland 12ga 5 Shot shell, item HS14715, is a 12 gauge, 2-3/4 inch upland load with 1 1/4 oz of #5 bismuth shot at a rated 1400 fps. It comes 25 rounds per box from HEVI-Shot, the Oregon maker known for dense, non-toxic hunting loads.
HEVI-Shot Bismuth Upland 12ga 5 Shot Overview
HEVI-Bismuth Upland gives bird hunters a non-toxic load that handles much like lead. Bismuth is about 22 percent denser than steel, so you can drop down one shot size and keep the same lethality. It is also soft enough that HEVI-Shot says it is safe to shoot in modern and classic guns, which makes it popular with hunters who carry a fine side-by-side or over-under in the uplands.
How HEVI-Bismuth Upland Works
Bismuth sits between steel and lead in density. Its extra weight per pellet holds energy downrange better than steel, and its softer nature behaves more like lead in the barrel and choke, so patterns open in a familiar way. Because it is non-toxic, it is legal on the many public lands and refuges that now require non-toxic shot for upland hunting.
Shot Size and Game
#5 is a common size for pheasant and other larger upland birds, offering a good balance of pellet energy and pattern density. A 1-1/4 ounce charge of #5 bismuth is a classic pheasant load, with enough pellet energy for roosters flushing at moderate range. Pattern your gun with this load before the season, because every barrel and choke combination reacts a little differently.
Choke and Barrel Notes
Bismuth patterns much like lead, so the choke you used with lead often works well, and it is soft enough to be gentle on barrels and fixed chokes. HEVI-Shot rates its bismuth as safe in older shotguns, but have a vintage gun checked by a gunsmith if you have any doubt about its condition.
Chamber and Recoil
Fire this shell only in 12 gauge shotguns chambered for 2-3/4 inch shells or longer. Never use it in a gun with a shorter chamber. Expect recoil in line with other hunting loads of this gauge and payload. A well-fitted gun, a good recoil pad and proper mount make long days in the field more comfortable.
Regulations
Non-toxic shot is required on many state and federal wildlife areas, refuges and public lands, even for upland birds, and this load meets that requirement. Seasons, bag limits and shot rules vary by state and by property, so check the regulations for where you hunt before the season opens.
Patterning Tips
Before the season, shoot this load at a large paper target from the distance you expect to hunt. Count how many pellets land in a 30 inch circle and look for gaps that a bird could slip through. Try more than one choke if you can, and note where the center of the pattern lands compared with your point of aim. A few shells spent at the range build real confidence in the field.
About HEVI-Shot
HEVI-Shot is an American ammunition company based in Oregon that helped pioneer dense, non-toxic shot. Its lineup covers waterfowl, upland, turkey and predator loads in steel, bismuth, blended and tungsten-based shot, all built for hunters who need non-toxic shot that still performs.
Storage and Care
Store shotshells in a cool, dry place in their original boxes. Shells used in the field often get wet; let them dry before storing, and discard any with swollen or damaged hulls.
