HEVI-Shot Hammer Upland 12ga 3in 3 Shot – Powerful Upland Shotshells

Description

The HEVI-Shot Hammer Upland 12ga 3in 3 Shot shell, item HS29113, is a 12 gauge, 3 inch upland load with 1 3/8 oz of #3 steel and bismuth shot. It comes 25 rounds per box from HEVI-Shot, the Oregon maker known for dense, non-toxic hunting loads.

HEVI-Shot Hammer Upland 12ga 3in 3 Shot Overview

HEVI-Hammer Upland brings HEVI-Shot’s steel and bismuth blend to pheasant and other upland birds. A top layer of bismuth pellets, about 15 percent of the charge, sits over steel pellets of the same size. HEVI-Shot says the bismuth layer hits about 50 percent harder than the steel at 40 yards. It is a sensible choice where non-toxic shot is required for upland hunting, such as many wildlife areas and public lands.

How HEVI-Hammer Upland Works

Bismuth is about 22 percent denser than steel, so a bismuth pellet carries more energy downrange than a steel pellet of the same size. Layering bismuth over steel adds penetration on tough birds such as roosters while keeping the cost below straight bismuth. Both materials are non-toxic, which matters on the growing list of public lands and refuges that require non-toxic shot for all hunting.

Shot Size and Game

#3 is a versatile size that balances pellet count and pellet energy. This 3 inch load, sold as a pheasant load, carries a heavy 1-3/8 ounce charge of #3 pellets for late-season roosters that flush wild and far. Pattern your gun with this load before the season, because every barrel and choke combination reacts a little differently.

Choke and Barrel Notes

Most upland hunters do well with improved cylinder or modified chokes for flushing birds. If the load contains steel, check that your choke and barrel are rated for steel shot, and never fire steel through a choke marked lead only. Older fixed-choke guns should be checked by a gunsmith first.

Chamber and Recoil

Fire this shell only in 12 gauge shotguns chambered for 3 inch shells or longer. Never use it in a gun with a shorter chamber. Expect recoil in line with other hunting loads of this gauge and payload. A well-fitted gun, a good recoil pad and proper mount make long days in the field more comfortable.

Regulations

Non-toxic shot is required on many state and federal wildlife areas, refuges and public lands, even for upland birds, and this load meets that requirement. Seasons, bag limits and shot rules vary by state and by property, so check the regulations for where you hunt before the season opens.

Patterning Tips

Before the season, shoot this load at a large paper target from the distance you expect to hunt. Count how many pellets land in a 30 inch circle and look for gaps that a bird could slip through. Try more than one choke if you can, and note where the center of the pattern lands compared with your point of aim. A few shells spent at the range build real confidence in the field.

About HEVI-Shot

HEVI-Shot is an American ammunition company based in Oregon that helped pioneer dense, non-toxic shot. Its lineup covers waterfowl, upland, turkey and predator loads in steel, bismuth, blended and tungsten-based shot, all built for hunters who need non-toxic shot that still performs.

Storage and Care

Store shotshells in a cool, dry place in their original boxes. Shells used in the field often get wet; let them dry before storing, and discard any with swollen or damaged hulls.
