Description

CCI 10mm Auto Bismuth Shotshell pest control ammunition box and cartridges

CCI 10mm Auto Bismuth Shotshell exists for a specific and unglamorous job: killing snakes, rats and other pests at close range without punching a bullet through a barn wall. CCI part 3710B loads 95 grains of number eight HEVI-Bismuth shot behind a Catalyst lead free primer and drives it at 1300 fps. Ten rounds to the box.

Why Bismuth Instead of Lead

HEVI-Bismuth shot runs about 9.6 grams per cubic centimetre, denser than steel and close enough to lead that pattern energy holds up at the short distances these loads are used at. The reason to bother is regulatory and practical. Lead free shotshell loads are legal where lead shot is restricted, and they are the sensible choice around livestock, poultry runs and anywhere a lead pellet might end up somewhere it should not. CCI alloys and casts the shot in the United States.

The Catalyst primer matters for the same reason. It is a lead free priming compound, so the entire round contains no lead at all. For anyone shooting inside a barn, a grain shed or an enclosed crawlspace, that also means far less airborne lead exposure, which is a genuine health consideration when you are firing in a confined space.

Pattern behaviour is what you would expect from a pistol length barrel with no choke. This 10mm pest control ammo is a very short range proposition, effective on a snake or a rat inside roughly ten feet and thinning out quickly beyond that. Nobody should think of it as a bird load. Used at the distance it was designed for, it is decisive and leaves no ricochet risk.

CCI 10mm Auto Bismuth Shotshell Specifications

The shot capsule is a blue plastic shell that opens on firing. It is not a bullet, and the payload is 95 grains of pellets rather than a single projectile, so energy figures do not translate the way they do for conventional ammunition.

Honest Notes on Handgun Shotshells

Cycling is the first and biggest caveat. Handgun shotshells are light for their caliber and the capsule does not always generate enough recoil impulse to work a semi automatic action. Most 10mm pistols will need to be cycled by hand between shots with CCI 10mm Auto Bismuth Shotshell loads. That is normal and not a defect, but it means you should think of your pistol as a single shot while these are loaded, and you should test it yourself rather than assume.

Magazine feeding can also be finicky. The blunt capsule nose does not always clear the feed ramp cleanly in every design. Load a few, cycle them through by hand, and find out how your specific pistol behaves before you need it.

Do not confuse this with a defensive load. At close range a shotshell will injure but it is not a reliable stopper on a person or a large animal, and pattern energy collapses within a few yards. If your 10mm is a trail gun, carry shotshells for snakes and a proper bullet for everything else, and know which is chambered.

Finally, check the rules where you shoot. Lead free shotshell ammunition is legal in a broader range of places than lead, which is much of the point, but discharge ordinances still apply and some jurisdictions treat shotshell handgun ammunition differently. Confirm before you rely on it around a property line.

If your 10mm doubles as a trail gun, pair these with a proper bullet such as the Underwood 150 grain Xtreme Hunter or the 115 grain Xtreme Defender. Full factory data is on the CCI Ammunition product page.
