Dense Patterns for Small, Fast Birds

#6 steel is a small shot size that fills the pattern with pellets. That density is ideal for teal and wood ducks that zip through the decoys, and for doves, quail and other upland birds on fields that require steel. More pellets in the pattern means more chances for clean, quick kills on small targets.

High velocity is especially helpful with small steel pellets, which lose speed faster than larger shot. At about 1,500 fps, this load keeps pellets moving fast enough to stay effective at typical teal and upland distances.

A fast burning, clean propellant and high performance primer keep residue down and ignition consistent, so your shotgun stays cleaner and runs reliably through busy mornings.

Field Notes and Teal Season Tips

Use Federal Speed-Shok 12ga 6 Shot Steel shells for early teal seasons, wood ducks over small water, and doves or upland birds on steel only lands. Keep shots inside about 35 yards, where small steel pellets are most effective.

An improved cylinder or skeet choke rated for steel gives the best patterns with small shot at close range. Pattern your gun at 25 and 30 yards to confirm.

Teal season often brings warm weather and mosquitoes. Arrive early, set up with the sun behind you, and stay still until birds commit.

Keep shells dry and clean your shotgun after each hunt to prevent rust in humid conditions.

If you hunt teal, wood ducks or upland birds where steel is required, Federal Speed-Shok 12ga 6 Shot Steel shells are a proven, practical choice. Pair them with a good call and a few decoys for early season success.

Teal are among the fastest ducks in North America, often buzzing the decoys low and in tight groups. A dense pattern of #6 steel from Federal Speed-Shok 12ga 6 Shot Steel shells gives you the best chance at these quick, close shots. Pick a single bird at the front of the group, swing through it and keep the gun moving after the shot.

Many hunters also carry a few boxes for wood ducks on creeks and beaver ponds, where shots come fast through timber openings.

Small steel loads also have a place on public dove fields and wildlife areas that require non toxic shot. With Federal Speed-Shok 12ga 6 Shot Steel shells, you can hunt those areas legally while still getting a dense pattern on fast, small birds. Bring plenty of shells, since busy dove fields can go through boxes quickly.

Clean your shotgun after each trip, wipe moisture from the action and choke threads, and store shells in a dry place. Good habits keep your gun and ammunition ready for the next early morning hunt.
