Bond Arms Commander in Chief 45-70 Overview

Bond Arms builds its derringers in Granbury, Texas, and the Cyclops is the biggest member of the family. Instead of two barrels, it uses one large bore that is part of the Bond Arms Rough Series, built to put a serious cartridge in a compact, all steel handgun.

Single Shot Design

Most Bond Arms pistols stack two barrels. The Cyclops uses one barrel bored for a single round, and the extra steel adds weight up front to help with recoil. At about 28 ounces it is still a light gun for 45-70, so recoil is heavy. Start with lighter loads and work up.

Grip and Trigger

The proprietary B6 resin grip is extended to fill the whole hand, and its texture keeps the gun from shifting when it fires. The single action trigger breaks at about 7 lb, and you cock the hammer for each shot.

Loading and Unloading

Like other Bond Arms pistols, the barrel tips up for loading. Bond Arms notes that the Cyclops barrel has no extractor, so you remove the fired case by hand. Practice the routine with snap caps before your first range trip.

Safety

Bond Arms handguns use a cross-bolt safety and a rebounding hammer. Bond Arms warns owners never to carry its handguns cocked and locked. Carry with the hammer down and follow the owner manual.

Who Shoots a Cyclops

The Cyclops is part conversation piece and part backup gun. Hunters and hikers like the idea of a big bore round in a compact package, and collectors like owning the most extreme pistol in the Bond Arms lineup. Because it is a single shot, it is not a replacement for a revolver or a semi-automatic as a primary defensive gun.

Choosing Ammunition

Standard 300 grain .45-70 loads are the place to start, and subsonic loads are noticeably softer. Avoid the heavy loads sold for modern lever and single shot rifles, and check the owner manual for approved ammunition. Expect heavy recoil and a big muzzle blast, and always wear eye and ear protection.

Holster and Carry

A holster made for the Cyclops frame is sold separately by Bond Arms. Standard derringer holsters will not fit the larger barrel and extended grip.

Cleaning and Care

Stainless steel resists rust, but you should still clean the bore after every range trip, especially after shooting lead bullets. Wipe the frame with a lightly oiled cloth before storage.

State Laws

Some states and cities restrict handgun purchases or limit which models can be sold. Check your state and local laws before you order. Pennsylvania buyers can transfer at our Collegeville shop or at any FFL.
