Description
The Freedom Ordnance FX-9 8 Inch SBA3 is Freedom Ordnance’s core 9mm AR-style pistol: an 8-inch barrel, a black anodized billet receiver set, an SB Tactical SBA3 adjustable brace and a 31-round Glock-type magazine, made in the USA for shooters who want a pistol-caliber AR without paying premium-brand prices.

Freedom Ordnance FX-9 8 Inch SBA3 Overview
This configuration (FX9P8S) is the standard FX-9 with the SBA3 brace. Freedom Ordnance lists it at about 23 to 24.75 inches overall depending on brace position and roughly 5 pounds 1.6 ounces without a magazine. It runs on a straight blowback system and accepts Glock-type 9mm magazines. The receivers are machined from billet aluminum with Type III anodizing, and the barrel, bolt, extractor, ejector, feed ramp and last-round hold open are nitrided for wear and corrosion resistance. A free-float M-LOK rail and a flat-top Picatinny rail are ready for lights and optics.
Why the 8-Inch Barrel
Eight inches is a sweet spot for a 9mm AR pistol. It gives noticeably more velocity than a handgun barrel without the length of a carbine, and it keeps muzzle blast lower than 4-inch models. The pistol stays compact enough for a truck or home-defense role, and the extra sight radius helps with red dots and iron sights alike. Freedom Ordnance also offers 4- and 10-inch versions; this 8-inch model balances size and performance well for most buyers.

SBA3 Brace
The SB Tactical SBA3 is a five-position adjustable arm brace that slides on the pistol buffer tube, letting you tailor length to your arm and gear. Brace rules have shifted repeatedly since ATF’s 2023 rule, which federal courts later vacated, so confirm current federal and state guidance before buying or altering it. Do not install a shoulder stock with this 8-inch barrel unless the gun is registered as a short-barreled rifle on an approved ATF Form 1.
Familiar AR Controls
If you have run an AR-15, the FX-9 needs no learning curve. It uses an AR-15 safety selector, AR-15 pistol grip and rear charging handle, with a proprietary AR-style magazine release placed where your finger expects it. The lower is threaded for mil-spec buffer tubes. Freedom Ordnance recommends keeping the factory trigger group, which has extra disconnector engagement for blowback timing, and warns that a JP silent buffer system will damage the upper.

Ammunition and Maintenance
Freedom recommends 115 grain FMJ from major makers for practice and select jacketed hollow points such as 124 grain loads for defense. Avoid aluminum-case ammunition, reloads and unjacketed lead, which can damage the gun or void the warranty. Blowback guns run dirty and recoil a bit sharper than gas or roller-delayed designs, so clean the bolt face, chamber and magazine well often. Glock-type magazines are easy to find, but test any aftermarket brand before trusting it.
Value and Trade-Offs
The FX-9 costs far less than premium 9mm PCC pistols while offering Glock magazine compatibility and a limited lifetime warranty. Its trade-offs are heavier bolt recoil inherent to blowback, a finish and fit that are good rather than refined, some FX-9-specific parts, and lower resale value than big-name brands. Sights are not included, so budget for a red dot or backup irons.
State Laws and Ownership
Several states restrict AR-style pistols, braces or magazines over 10 or 15 rounds, and some ban this configuration outright. Pennsylvania currently allows braced 9mm AR pistols with standard capacity magazines. Freedom Ordnance ships a compliant magazine when required. Your receiving dealer must confirm the pistol can legally transfer to you, so check your state and local laws before ordering.
