Description

Birchwood Casey DuraCap 9mm Training Rounds are six machined aluminium dummies anodised bright red, part number BC-DCTR-9MM. The count is the thing worth noticing. Most dummy rounds are sold two to a pack, which covers a chamber check and little else. Six will fill a magazine.

Why Six Changes What You Can Practise

A pair of snap caps lets you dry fire and check a chamber. That is useful and it is not most of what goes wrong with a pistol. The mistakes people actually make happen during loading, unloading, reloading under pressure and clearing a stoppage, and none of those can be practised properly with two rounds.

With six Birchwood Casey DuraCap 9mm rounds you can load a magazine, seat it, rack, run the slide dry, practise a tap and rack, do a reload from a spare magazine and repeat the whole sequence without ever handling live ammunition. That is the drill set worth owning dummies for.

Birchwood Casey DuraCap 9mm rounds are machined from solid aluminium with an anodised finish rather than moulded from plastic. Plastic dummies swell, split and eventually stick in a chamber. Aluminium keeps its dimensions through repeated chambering, which is what you need from something you intend to cycle hundreds of times.

Birchwood Casey DuraCap 9mm Specifications

Made by Birchwood Casey, a company most shooters know for targets, bluing and cleaning products rather than training rounds. The DuraCap line is their take on the same idea, and the construction is conventional in the best sense: aluminium body, anodised finish, cushioned primer face.

The red finish on Birchwood Casey DuraCap 9mm is a deliberate choice and matters more than it sounds. A dummy round has one safety job beyond training, which is to be obviously not live at a glance, in a bag, on a bench or in dim light. Bright anodised red does that where a brass coloured dummy does not.

Six Birchwood Casey DuraCap 9mm rounds will fill most single stack magazines completely and give a useful partial load in a double stack. If you want to fill a 15 or 17 round magazine for feeding checks, buy two packs.

Rules for Practising With Dummy Rounds at Home

Live ammunition leaves the room. Not the bench, not a drawer, the room. This is the single rule that prevents the accident that dummy rounds are supposed to make impossible, and the bright red finish on Birchwood Casey DuraCap 9mm is a backup to that habit rather than a replacement for it.

Count your Birchwood Casey DuraCap 9mm rounds in and out of every session. Six is an easy number to account for, which is another quiet advantage over larger packs. If you finish a session with five, stop and find the sixth before you put live rounds anywhere near the gun.

Never mix dummies into a magazine with live rounds at home. There is a legitimate range drill where a partner loads a dummy into your magazine without telling you, to expose a flinch, and that belongs on a range with a backstop and someone else loading. It is not a living room exercise.

Remember a striker fired pistol needs the slide cycled between trigger presses. A dummy round does not reset the striker, so the drill is press, rack, press. That is how the gun works rather than a limitation of the caps.

Retire them when they get chewed. Aluminium marks where the firing pin lands and where the extractor bites, and a dummy that has lost its finish has also lost some of its ability to be recognised instantly as inert.

Birchwood Casey DuraCap 9mm Training Rounds suit anyone who wants to practise the handling side of shooting rather than just the trigger press. Six rounds is the difference between checking a chamber and actually rehearsing a reload. Ships from our licensed inventory in Collegeville, Pennsylvania.

If you carry or shoot more than one calibre, it is worth keeping a set for each and storing them separately. Our A-Zoom 380 ACP StrikerCaps cover the pocket pistol side in bright orange, and our A-Zoom 9mm Luger snap caps are the blue alternative in this calibre if you would rather colour code by calibre than by brand.

Pair the dry work with live practice rather than replacing it. Our Federal Champion 9mm 124 grain FMJ is the inexpensive range load most people build their volume on, and the drills you groove at home are what make that range time count.

Store them in their own tin or pouch rather than loose in a range bag, and keep them out of the pocket where live rounds live. An ammo box sized for 9mm works as well for dummies as it does for live ammunition.
